I've just ordered 700 litres from my local independent, HBS of Chilbolton, at the same price as last August of 45p/litre.0

Lucky me!
Received a letter earlier today from Avanti (ex Shell). Apparently:
It's so nice to know that I haven't been forgotten. I wonder if this is an "across the board" rise, or is just being targeted at certain customers? Has anyone else had a similar letter recently?
Or, hot on the heels of Countrywide's latest increase, is this just the second in the latest round of price rises?
Hi Everyone
I'm new to the forum, but an LPG user for 15 years. I have received the same letter with same increase.
For reference I am currently paying 43p per litre and my average annual consumption is around 3200 litres.
I have ony had chance to skim through the thread so far. Is the general concensus to challenge the increase, or is it justifiable in this case?
My normal plan of attack has been to challenge each rise regardless, which has worked well over the years!0 -
I thought it about time I contributed something to the forum.
I would just like to say that the information I have gleaned from the forum has been invaluable, it has also served to give me a sense of perspective. In terms of background, my house in south west Wales has a 2,250 litre underground tank, which we use to heat a detached property with three reception rooms and four bedrooms. To my surprise, our consumption seems to be on the low side at just shy of 3,000 litres pa.
We have been with Flogas since we bought the house in 2003, albeit we used it as a holiday home until 2010 and used to use a lot less LPG than we do now. We are currently paying 53p/litre, together with a Standing Charge of 12.32ppd. Prior to last October we were paying 50p/litre. Flogas then attempted to hike the price by 6p/litre, which I strongly resisted on the grounds that the increase was unjustified and unaffordable. Hence the current compromise. That said, I also told Flogas that we would not be ordering any more gas from them come what may. Fortunately, we have had a relatively mild winter and I have been able to keep to my word. Our current contract expires in March and so the whole saga will resume. Can't wait.
Meantime, some of you might have seen an article in the Times recently about an oil club website that aims to assist communities throughout the country by giving them greater bargaining power and reducing the number of delivery journeys. I wonder whether it might be possible to introduce something similar for those of us who rely on LPG to heat our homes?0 -
I'm new here but have read with interest some of the threads.
I'm based in south wales and have just had a notification of increase to .559ppl.
we moved in to property in November 2007 @ £0.34ppl
feb 08 £0.38
feb 09 £0.435
Aug 09 £0.385
jan 10 £0.415
dec 10 £0.465
apr 11 £0.499
Feb 12 £0.559
thats a 64.4% increase since we moved in!
I thought that the price of gas was meant to be dropping, or are they just chasing in?:)
some extra detail i should have posted originally.
2000 ltr tank below ground
supplier is West Wales Gas
consumption approx 2700 litres per annum
4 bed detached new house well insulated.
i just checked we signed a 3 year contract when we moved in so we must now be out of contract.0 -

Hi Taff, and welcome to the forum.
Assuming you are a typical user, I would say that a price of 55.9ppl is well over the odds.
In order to give you some more specific suggestions, it would be extremely helpful if you could let us know:- who your current supplier is;
- when you last signed a contract with them;
- approximately what your annual usage is and whether this has changed significantly over the past four years.
If this is the case, and you have not signed any new contract since August 09, then the good news is that you will be free to change suppliers. If you can post more specific information as detailed above, there are plenty here who can offer more comprehensive answers to your problems and hopefully point you in the right direction to keep warm for far less.
In addition to finding you a better deal, there are also a number of important issues here in respect of fair contracts and fair pricing, especially in the light of the OFT's recent (and in my opinion rather flawed) study into Off Grid Energy supply. Again, if you could post more detail on your specific situation, then there maybe cause for additional action in respect of your apparently unreasonable price increases.0 -
Hello Everyone,
My mum asked me to post this (hence the name) although I have for a long time read posts on this site I never got round to signing up but as I'm sure you know mothers can be rather persuasive/pestering.
Anyhow my parents house runs on LPG and I know she often comments on the cost to fill her tank
She asked me to post this as she as just changed supplier and got a better deal , I will ask her exactly what when I visit her next, getting a sunday roast for this
She had a card drop through her letterbox with a phone number and a code to quote and she asked could the code be used by her neighbours/friends so here goes
The company is called flowgas apparently you have to not be with this company already, my mum was with shell.
The phone number is 0800 783 4172 and the code SP0619 you have to quote
I don't know if this is a help to anyone
ps
I love you mum
( I know she will ask to see what i have wrote )0 -

Welcome to the forum! (and welcome to your mum too!).
Thanks for letting us all know of this marvellous offer from Flogas!
But you say that you "have for a long time read posts on this site" so you must have read that there are a LOT of posts suggesting people give Flogas a miss. Some have expressed this quite strongly e.g. "avoid like the plague" and "don't touch with a bargepole".
You say you are in West Lancs so if your mum is nearby and you'd put her postcode in the UKLPG website (here) she should have found quite a few possible suppliers - e.g. BDS, Premier, LPG HomeHeat, Cheshire Gas as well as Calor, Flogas and Avanti (formerly Shell), depending exactly where she lives. There might be farmers' co-ops or non-UKLPG members too.
I'm glad your mum is glad with her deal - and, of course, she'll have signed a 2 year contract so I hope she'll also be happy with the price she'll be paying further down the line. Flogas does NOT have any cap on its price rises in their domestic LPG contracts, I believe: maybe you'd be very kind to us all and check her contract and post if they do? I believe they have been criticised by the Office for Fair Trading in the past for this.
I hope you have a lovely sunday roast with your mum - and I haven't spoilt it for you with this post (well, I'm not called LittleVermin for nothing!). If she invites me too, I promise I won't accuse her of being "pestering" (you really ought to be more careful - after she's read your post you might just end up with Saturday's leftovers!).
PS If she'd told Shell (Avanti) she was thinking of changing her supplier there's a chance they might have offered a wonderful deal too, with an eye-watering initial price! BTW how much is she paying: you were a bit coy about posting the price!
PPS You're not also called Flo by any chance, are you, MumsLittleHelper? See here! Maybe you're not really Flo, just Flo'sLittleHelper? Go on, tell us - we promise we won't tell anyone else!

Had a phone-call last week from a very nice lady who was doing a survey on LPG usage. I wondered how she knew I was an LPG user so asked - the answer was.... the survey was on behalf of Countrywide! Whilst being polite, I explained in detail my thoughts on LPG and the vast differences in the pricing levels of not only Countrywide but also many of the other suppliers. I phoned Countrywide at the beginning of this week to try and find out the best price they could offer me but so far, in spite of leaving my details, no return call. Today a letter arrived from Calor offering me an unbeatable deal plus £150 worth of gas if I changed over to them. They'd perhaps forgotten that I'd changed from them to Countrywide nearly two years ago because of the constant increases in ppl! At least I've got until the beginning of May to make the decision!0

We received the same letter, so we are now on 49.8p. What concerned me more though was a letter from Avanti Gas asking us to "confirm that your service agreement details are correct" by signing and returning a form. I assume all people shifted from Shell were sent this. If you read the very small print, it's actually a 2 year supply agreement - and the form contains no date, and only asks you to sign, not date, the agreement!
Some of the games these companies are playing really make me mad! :mad:0 -

Hi mad-mark - and welcome to the Bulk LPG thread.
I suggest you write asap to the Office for Fair Trading. The OFT sent me this last November re the Competition Commission Orders, and domestic LPG contracts:
Any concerns you may have about compliance with these Orders may be drawn to the attention of our Markets Policy and Remedies team by e-mailing sharon.dias@oft.gsi.gov.uk. The OFT is also, as noted in our study report, engaging with suppliers to seek, where necessary, improvement in the clarity of contract terms, particularly concerning cancellation and switching rights.
