Bear with me if I have lost the plot a little, busy weekend so I have read a lot of posts to catch up, I didn't want to fall behind.We used to hear about "muesli belt malnutrition", relating to the ill-informed application of health advice by the wealthy. I'm afraid that a lot of what people believe is gleaned from poorly researched newspaper and magazine articles, and has more to do with glib recitation of accepted truths or of funding-conscious PR campaigns from academic institutions than with actual science. I speak as someone who once earned £20 from publication of a tip so ridiculous (and so made-up) that I'm too ashamed to repeat it here.

I like that you are willing to challenge the assumptions people make, and I think that posting your 50p a day plan it may make the 80p a day plan more appealing. Let me explain the reasoning...
In most supermarkets there will be levels of brands, value, standard, branded and top of the range. So, in the biscuit aisle you have value digestives, own brand digestives, brand name digestives and then the luxury brand. Sometimes there will be another rung above this. We are more likely to but the 2nd level down if the top one is a luxury, expensive product because it seems more reasonable. So you won't buy ice cream made from pureed fairy poo because it is £5 per 100g, but you are more likely to buy the £4 for 500g ice cream because in comparison it is cheaper. The reverse is also true; people will go for something one up from the lowest if the lowest one sets the bar really low but shows that is reasonable. So, maybe my children won't eat crackers made of grated floorboards at 10p for 100 but the next rung up seems reasonable at 30p for 100 now, and I am giving a little bit more to them than the basics (making me feel like a good mum!). If you put in the 50p thread, you lower the bar of what is possible for people and make the 80p plan seem like more of a luxury to people and they feel like they are getting a little 'treat' rather than feeling deprived. So, what I am saying is that posting the 50p plan may make more people do the 80p plan

had a look at the nutmeg site
looks interesting and useful if you are a caterer for an institution. It says you can build your own recipes, but it looks like that would only be using their database of ingredients which would be of limited use to us
it also seems to be one of those sites that pull you in and then everything that you actually want to do costs extra
