I need details of the machine and version of XP. Home or Professional. Just look at the bottom of the machine. Dell won't be particularly helpful.

    Inspiron 9400
    Windows XP Media Center Edition

    Which model?

Do I tick and download "all categories"

Under "Dell Diagnostics Utility" there are "more options". Not sure what to do with that one!

Yes...you probably won't need them all, but better to have them at hand than not.

Are there more details as to the version of Media Centre Edition? I'll see if I can find a disc.
May be safer to go with Windows XP Professional. Uploading a disc for you. Will be in your PM box tomorrow, together with instructions of how to burn the image to disc.

That's great, thanks very much for taking the time to help.

There is no other information on the label other than "Media Centre Edition"

I have downloaded the Dell Driver Download Manager. Thought I had downloaded the drivers from the Dell site as I had ticked all of them and they were showing download which I clicked but when I click on "Programmes" and "Dell Driver Download Manager", message saying "no files". Help, please?

Does the serial number, and type of XP (ie media center) match the sticker, if so, call microsoft, you have a valid license.

If not, AFTER backing up all your data, try this to set it to the state it was when it left the factory

Troubleshooting: Dell Inspiron 9400/E1705 Owner's ManualTo use PC Restore:
    1. Turn on the computer.
During the boot process, a blue bar with www.dell.com appears at the top of the screen.
    1. Immediately upon seeing the blue bar, press <Ctrl><F11>.
If you do not press <Ctrl><F11> in time, let the computer finish starting, and then restart the computer again.
notice.gif NOTICE: If you do not want to proceed with PC Restore, click Reboot in the following step.
    1. On the next screen that appears, click Restore.
    2. On the next screen, click Confirm.
The restore process takes approximately 6–10 minutes to complete.
    1. When prompted, click Finish to reboot the computer.

Maybe you can ignore the Dell Driver Download Manager....or you can learn how to use it. :) Download via your Browser if you can't get around the Download Manager.

If it's all a bit stressful to you, just download the Network Driver applicable to your model. Are you still able to access files on the laptop?

If so, go to the Device Manager and double click on Network Adapters. This will show the hardware version installed. Just download the Driver that corresponds to that Hardware.
Once you have installed the Operating System, you can install the Network Driver. From there you can install Drivers automatically via Windows Update or navigate to the DELL Support page and retrieve from there.

Personally I would run Belarc Advisor and keep a copy of the report. Then you'll know exactly which Drivers to download and install when it comes to it.

But has a COA sticker, and an installation, it's could be a WGA problem, or someone else has used the license, or cowboy has installed the wrong version of windows XP.

Probably need an OEM disc anyway.

She doesn't have a disc. ?? In addition, if she did have a disc, it would likely be a Retail disc. Unlike the Dell OEM version. Maybe.
