I'd love the recipe for microwaved flapjacks please:T
45ml/3 tbsp Golden Syrup
100g/4 oz Sugar
100g/4 oz Butter
225g/8oz Rolled Oats
1 Egg Beaten
5ml/1 tsp Baking Powder
Pinch of Salt
Put the golden syrup, sugar and butter in a container. Cook on high for 2-3 minutes or until the sugar has dissolved.
Stir in the rolled oats with the beaten egg, baking powder and salt.
Spread the mixture into a round, shallow container (18-20cm/7-8 in) lined with non-stick or greased greaseproof paper.
Cook on high for 4-6 minutes, turning the dish once or twice in microwaves without turntables.
Allow to stand for 5 minutes, then mark into sections with a knife.
Allow the flapjacks to cool in the container before cutting them.
Handle this with care - they are too nice to make regularly. Just one note - I have left the egg out from this regularly as I have a friend who cannot eat eggs - it just makes them a little less light.
Enjoy. What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -
I use tesco hot oat cereal or just value porridge oats :]0

Morrisons sell 500g bags of Mornflake jumbo oats for about 53p. They are the most "whole" oats that I have come across and good for porridge as well as other things. They have a nice "big" texture-not at all powdery, and they are usually to be found in the "baking" aisle-not the "cereal" aisle.0

......
I have got some diy porridge oats - and even got some golden syrup, so I will make an effort to go the cheaper route - especially once my stockpiles run out
Well, I tried..... and half of it went in the bin !!
Waste of milk and golden syrup.... back to the sachets for now0 -
Re the Flap-jack recipe = thanks
I always add some dried fruit to my mix, which always plumps up nicely during 'cooking'. Doesn't matter whether it is raisins, currents or sultanas. All taste just as good - imo
I will also throw in anything else lurking in the cupboard such as dessicated coconut and the dregs of the cereal packets - the odd cornflake, dried strawberry or nut only adds a bit of interest. Any glace cherrys left from Christmas - chop and throw in.
Also, all the broken sorry biscuits at the bottom of the biscuit tin ? - melt a bar of chocolate and mix in with the crushed up biscuits, again throw in dried fruit etc and leave to cool.
Cut into manageable pieces, and voila, delicious chocolate crunch. Always goes down well - and fast, and means I can put fresh supplies in the biscuit tin with a clear conscience.
And finally, I add a handful of porridge oats to crumble mix. Makes for a slightly different texture and taste.

I cook it in a big pyrex bowl in the microwave, I use half water and milk and cook it for about 10 mins for three of us (obviously less for one portion). Kids love it with chocolate spread but I prefer syrup- Mmm it's like pudding for breakfast.
This is exactly how I make my morning porridge, I've been having it every morning for the last 15+ years. I often add a small portion of blueberries once it's straight out of the microwave, leave it for 5 minutes and then it's just perfect. I usually buy Hamlyns , or Scotts oats.
My wife now also addicted to the oats so simples.0 -
Just buy plain oats, the sachets are eyewateringly expensive and much less versatile. i know what you mean about porridge being a bit unpredictable at time but that's half the fun
and it does take a few attempts to work out your favourite "recipe" - how much milk:water etc
August grocery challenge: £50
Spent so far: £37.40 :A0 -
Oats are cheap. So why skimp on really cheap oats which make porridge like wall paper paste.
Sainsburys Taste The Difference. 750g for about 80p
My prefered recipe....
1 espresso cup oats
2 espresso cups water
1/4 teaspoon salt
Place all of the above in 1 litre pyrex bowl
Microwave 2 mins
Stir
Microwave 2 mins more
Stand for 1 min
Serve
Yum!0
