I joined up when making a "mymemory" purchase. Having said that it was very clear to me what I was doing. It was clear it was a signup and would cost £10 a month. It wasn't a default option, but was offered.
I decided to join, have sent in 2 claims within the trial period totally £25. Am just deciding whether to remain a member for a few more days to make another £10 claim.
The cashback/etc looks little different to other sites
I've emailed CS quite a few times and each time got a fairly quick helpful response.
I also received an email when joining which referred to billing (admittedly towards the end), and a reminder a few days ago that I would be billed.
So I'm not sure "scam" is really a fair description -- as long as the signup information remains clear, and the offer is used intelligently? What goes around - comes around

Many people (not just on this forum) would all tell you they did not sign up for it, in effect they got scammed.
Many more people are still unaware that moneys are being taken out of their accounts for a company they don't even know about. In effect they are being scammed.
I note with thanks to GabrielKnight that SDR have suddenly changed their T&C's but we shall wait and see just how many others say they have had monies taken from their accounts from this company without their knowledge or formal agreement.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

I too have discovered this £8.00 charge on my charge card who when I called them to ask for an explanation admitted to me that they considered this charge to be 'sneaky'. I find it interesting that on my statement that they publish a contact telephone number for ShoppersDirect, to me this indicates they have numerus complaints. I have no recollection of where or when I 'apparently' agreed to sign up for this charge the email account that there disembodied vice trots out is wrong the site claims my email does not exist. The recorded voice system tells me that any further charges are now cancelled.
I think that this stinks and is at best sharp practice and at worst fraud. How may more 'victims' are there about there?
I wuld like to hear from anyone who has bebefitted from thsi scam and believ they should be shut down.0 -
They offered Alistair a 3 month refund without him even asking for or even mentioning it first... They may be a legit company but they KNOW they are doing this all on the sly and conning people out of their money..

Hi planetf1, SR&D are scamming people by using businesses we trust in order to obtain our card details and sign up (unknowingly) to a membership which charges £8 to £10 per month.
This is what is called a confidence trick, con, swindle or scam.
The 23 pages in this thread support the fact it is a scam, as many people didn’t know they even signed up to it and only found out when they rang SD&R, some clicked on a box which offered a future discount, which didn’t clearly state you was signing up to a membership which charges.
Maybe in the last few months they have changed the way they operate, but when I was signed up into their membership I didn’t know anything about it.
As for their service I cannot comment.0 -

A new person here that has been scammed. I have recently sat down to complete my expenses for the last few months and I've noticed that this £8 charge has been coming out of my credit card for the last 8 months. I have had no idea about this and catagorically have not knowingly authorised this expenditure.
The company I purchased from online is a company called Ligo Electronics in Glasgow.
I have complained to shopperdiscounts.co.uk and they have agreed to refund 3 months. I've said no.. unless i get the whole lot, I will report them to the fraud department at my local police as well as trading standards. I have contacted Ligo Electronics and expressed very harshly my upset at them passing my credit card details onto a third party without full understanding from me that it has been done.
I too run an online business, taking many 10's of thousands of pounds payments each year and I fully understand my obligations as a business when it comes to confidentiality of opther peoples details. We, as a business, would NEVER operate this kind of service.
Is there a list of business that currently offer this shopperdiscounts.co.uk at the end of the online sale?
if so, where? if not, could we have one on this site and maintain an alphabetically list of companies so the end consumer has the chance to be informaed?0 -
Hi foxytivo, sorry to hear you've been had by SD&R. Like most people in here I found SD&R very happy to give me all my money back after one phone call and the posting of a claim form, so I’m sure you’ll get all your money back, I've put a guide together on page 21 of this thread which should help.
I agree that the companies using SD&R should be more responsible. I’ve been putting together a list of the site using SD&R, just by googling ‘SD&R’ and seeing the complaints on forums like this one, and noting the names of the companies the posters gave. Here are some of the companies I see more often:
National Express
Interflora
Thetrainline.com
EasyJet
Expedia
Monarch
Ebookers
electricshopping.com
Photobox.co.uk
I sent an email to the Mirror last week, and received a response today, which doesn’t fill me with hope.Jamie,
Thanks for the suggestion, but we've already written about this company last year and continue to receive complaints from readers.
Best regards,
Nick
I think from this reply we can take whatever the Mirror wrote wasn't too successful if they 'continue to receive complaints', but they did at least try. If at first you dont succeed...
I suggest that posters send an email to their local paper and ask them to make the public more aware of SD&R, and publish the names of the companies who allow SD&R to sign up their customers.
If anyone is willing to put some time in maybe we could research the companies using SD&R and create a template letter we could email to local and national newspapers.
Maybe one day a person who is a 'money saving expert' will help too.:money:0 -
:mad: I have also just discovered that these thieves (no other way to describe them) have been stealing 8 pound every month for the last 4 months . It would appear that it was after I purchased an Easy Jet flight. Visa say they cant do anything . Somebody must STOP them now I have spoken to them and am told I will recieve a refund (not holding my breath waiting for it)
How can it be legal to use somebodys credit card without actualy asking permision from them and it begs the question how secure is the Easy Jet web site if you book a flight and then discover some less than honest company has all your details and is taking money every month . WAKE UP EASY JET after all its the only way to book a flight with you . I for sure will not be booking another Easy Jet flight untill I am asured they have secured the Web site. Would be good if ALL COMPANYS INVOLVED WERE NAMED AND SHAMED HERE. Maybe it would make them act and clean up there security.:mad::mad:0 -

I booked a ticket on TheTrainline today, was offered the £15 discount off next order, but this time was asked to give my card number for them to "pay in my rewards". This seemed suspicious because companies only need your sort code and account number to pay in.
I gave my card details anyway because the webpage went on seeminly endlessly with repetitive information but no mention of a monthly subscription, and I thought it would be safe with a company like Trainline refering it.
I did find it so strange to be asked my card details though that I started to research it. My 'offer' doesn't seem so bad if I read the small print. I get the £15 off for signing up and am charged £10 a month like others.
For the £10 a month I can apparently claim the £10 back each month by emailing a Trainline.com ticket conformation to Shopper Direct. My mother books at least one ticket a month so this in theory should leave me evens.
For my membership, I can claim cashback for using various high profile stores from eBay @ 2%, Littlewoods @ 8% and more obscure ones up to 25%. This is not much of an incentive to me as other free sites do this offer.
The other incentives like extended warranties / damaged / stollen goods might make the whole affair worth while?
Get extended warrantee. We''ll automatically DOUBLE the manufacturer's warranties on all your qualifying purchases. You'll be covered TWICE as long, up to one additional full year!
Get damage, loss and theft Protection - so you can enjoy worry-free shopping and added peace of mind. All your qualifying purchases are protected from the second you complete your transaction, and for 90 days after. If your purchase gets lost, stolen or damaged, you'll be covered!
Get delivery guarantees. If your qualifying purchase made from a catalogue or online retailer gets lost or stolen during delivery, we'll cover it!
£10 monthly bonus from TheTrainline.com - as a member of Shopper Discounts & Rewards, you can enjoy ongoing savings when you make a booking at thetrainline.com with a £10 Member Bonus each and every month, up to £120 per year, for as long as you remain a Shopper Discounts & Rewards member.
Ultimately the value depends on the ethics of the company, which due to the deception in the initial signing up policy seem few and far between.
I'd really like to hear from anyone like me who signed up half knowing what the scheme involves and has successfully claimed or not managed to claim a part of what the scheme promises.0
