bath screens
Can anyone recommend a good make/supplier of bath shower screens, ideally want a single or folding/sliding double screen, not a 4fold one. Am wanting to spend less than £100 ideally, but I am willing to go up to £150 if necessary for a good one that looks the part :) Would this one be any good? I don't know what makes are…

Cleaning original stained glass leaded windows
Hi wonder if anyone could offer some advice on what is the best product/concoction (we were wondering vinegar?) to clean the original leaded stained glass windows in our recently purchased 1930s home. They are being encapsulated in to new windows so the glass and the lead needs a really good clean because once they are…

New Boiler - Softened Water - Separate Feed?
I'd appreciate some advice from someone in the know. We're considering replacing our 20 year old Netaheat boiler and have been quoted for a Baxi condensing boiler. Our water supply goes through a softener that uses salt in the process. I have been told that the softened water is not compatible with the new boiler's heat…

is it a good idea? In general is it more worthwhile if you are working with expensive material? Is it full of pitfalls if you are not already pretty proficient?(I have'nt done it before)

Expensive Building Quote? What do you think?
Hi everyone I have just had a rough quote given over the phone by an FMB Registered Builder for a single storey extension onto the side of my bungalow which is on a nice level, easily accessible plot. The extension will be approx 8.5 metres long and 3.5 metres deep, brick faced with a pitched roof and will include 3 rooms…

Problem with wireless thermostat
Hi all, I have a Siemens RDJ10RF wireless thermostat that has stopped working. I've just got back from holiday and while I was away I turned off both the boiler and the thermostat. When I turned them back on again the thermostat does not appear to be communicating with my boiler. I have reset and tested the connection…

Sky - Moving Home
Hi guys, I've been with sky in my current "deal" since 2006 when my boyfriend (now hubby) moved in together. When we moved house in 2007 I rang up Sky and blagged free moving thing (threatened to cancel), but now the time of moving is happening again in August and of course I want our sky package to move with us. Do you…

Adhesive tiles in the kitchen - oh my days, the glue!
So the crazy people who owned our house previously decided to put down those self-adhesive tiles from Homebase in the kitchen. They look awful. We want to put down tile effect laminate, but before we do these evil sticky things have got to come off. I can remove them with a hot air gun easily enough, but the glue remains…

Grey stripes on uvpc conservatory
Not sure if this is the right place for this! We had a conservatory built two and half years ago and are finding the white frames are going a grey colour in places and we have distinct grey/black stripes on the top widows under the guttering. We used the same firm that put in the windows about 11 years ago and they are all…

Sparks flying out of light fitting!
Just come home and switched my hall lights on (2 x 3 GU10 50W halogens, not enclosed). One halogen lamp made a quiet pop, tripping out the lighting ring and a spark flew out. This is the second time in two years I have had a light do this - previously a traditional two pin fluorescent bulb in a wall light made a loud…

Whats even Worster'er than Aquashield
Watch out theres a conman about. there are reams of threads about roof coating and the "companies" offering the service. But the latest news is about other 'men' going round offering refunds for overcharged work. Piucking on any roof coated house, they find older owners and........ Q: "You are owed (say) £1500, we…

Servicing & Fixing your own washing machine - is it possible and is it safe?
I have a problem with my AEG washing machine (washer / dryer) which is only about 12 months old. It shows an E20 fault which I believe is a problem draining. So I have been researching this on the net to avoid having to get out an engineer. I happened across this website which says that it is easy to service and fix…

Ariston Washing Machine
Anyone got any ideas on how to diagnose problems with washing machines? My 5 year warranty ran out in December, so not sure whether to call them out or not; I switch on the washing machine but nothing happens - it doesn't fill, the programme dial doesn't move... nothing.

Advice needed re.first shower pump
Hi, I'm re-doing our ensuite, putting in a new shower and shopping for a pump to increase the water pressure. In addition to the new shower, we have two other showers in the house (Trevi Therm - 17+ years old). The plumber who will do the work says he can install a pump to service all three showers (it's unlikely that all…

Advice regarding floorboards
I bought some laminate to put down in the nursery we are decorating for LO due in September. On pulling the carpet up we found some gorgeous floorboards so have just returned the laminate. The floorboards have already been sanded and varnished/glossed (not sure of right terminology!!). I just want to know what (if…

Difference in fitting Porcelain Tile vs Ceramic
Hi, I got a quote from a tiler which I was happy about, based upon fitting ceramic tiles. I've now gone and bought porcelain tiles. Does it make any difference? Is it harder to cut porcelain? Would it be a more expensive job to fit? Can ready-mixed adhesive be used on porcelain as it can with ceramic? I'd appeciate some…

Magnaclean/boiler help please
W've recently had our Baxi boiler serviced by British Gas and the engineer advised us to get a Mangnaclean. The quote is £250 which seems a bit extreme to me? Is it any good and is it worth the money? Are they easy to fit if we bought one?
