Container veggies
Hello, Last year I had a go at growing veg in big pots - had good courgettes, spring onions and tomatoes. Beans did nothing and carrots only fed us for a couple of meals! Planted some broad beans before Christmas and they were going great guns until the snow which killed them off! Wondered about some fruit canes? Can…

Strange white lichen ??
Hello everyone - my first post! I have a large golden privet as a hedge. A bit of it has died, and there is this strange white stuff on the branches? It looks just as if someone has splashed white paint on it. Does anyone have any ideas what it is, please? Thank you!

"Free" seeds/plants with Coinks
The Coinks reward scheme is currently offering 10 packs of veg seeds (usual suspects, nothing surprising) for £1.99 postage, alliums for £3.99 postage and gardening DVDs, all in exchange for Coinks points. They seem to have extended the scheme so it's easier to collect Coinks from products like Andrex, McVities and Tetley.…

Green Cone
Would a green cone for breaking down all kitchen waste work if the base was put into pure clay soil? Does there need to be a capacity for fluid to soak away Will I just create a permanent sump of rotting food? If it is the latter I'd better sell the cone.

Curly hose, good idea?
I have been thinking about buying a curly hosepipe as a smallish one would reach all round my garden. I would like to know if they spring back and hang neatly by the tap or ( as I suspect) spring back into and tie themselves into a huge knot. Cheers, B

Herbs in the porch?
We have a large porch at the front of our house. It has large glass windows on two sides, a glass front door and a tiled roof. It doesn't have central heating so it's cold in there in the winter, and it has an opening window as it gets too hot in the summer! I was thinking about buying this plant stand and some zinc bucket…

my 88 strawbs from aldi are in
I searched Lidl, Aldi and Sainsbury for tall wash baskets (the ones with lots of holes in but no joy. Sainsbury however, did have small ones for £2.50 so I bought four. I burned holes in the bottom with a hot knife *what a stink. Then I lined the bottom third with a binliner (holes in it)to stop soil washing away down the…

Horse carrots and parsnips - Can we eat them?
My local discount store has 10kg sacks of carrots and parsnips for £1.99. They are advertising them as horse food but they appear to be ok. Is it because they are just mis-shappen or is there some other reason they are not being sold for human consumption.

Help identifying this plant
I stayed at a friends house this weekend and really liked the plant they had in their bathroom, as it was family unusual. It had quite skinny tube shaped 'leaves' Unfortunately they had no idea what it was! http://Picasa.Google.com/108626656965590601140/dropbox?authkey=Gv1sRgCMSi7MyDjpu-4gET#5575813650461683874 I've had a…

Uni Gardening!
Hi everyone, I did this last year at Uni and it worked a treat. I was fed up of paying loads for basic salad veg, do I decided to plant some of my own. I went online and ordered a packet of cut-and-comeback type mixed lettuce seeds, I planted these in various random containers I found and I had tonnes of lettuce after…

crocus.co.uk border design service
Has anyone tried this? I know you have to pay for it but I am positively clueless on what plants to put into my border and I have 25m x 1m to fill with plants. It would be so much easier to have a plan to follow. Please let me know your experiences if you have used this service, or alternatively any cheap or free tools…

Can I divide a Calathea plant?
Last year I bought a calathea plant (long, slender silk-like leaves which are a beautiful purple on the under side). I was led to believe they are quite difficult to look after, so I am really pleased that it is sprouting loads of new shoots. My question is, is it OK to divide the plant and, if so, is there any particular…

Heated window sill propagator
T&M and lots of other sites sell a 7 section windowsill heated propagator. The cheapest I've seen it is £25 on amazon. How useful are these devices REALLY? I've never used one but am keen to get my peppers and herbs, (strawberries too?) off to a quick start this year. How much use would I be likely to get out of my…

Dwarf fruit trees in beds?
My little girl has requested an apple tree in our very small garden. I saw these http://www.jparkers.co.uk/plant-1001011-cc-2/3-midget-fruit-tree-collection/ and wondered if I would be able to plant them in the flower bed next to our patio (it's about 50cm wide)? Do I need to keep them away from the house so the roots…
