Would a green cone for breaking down all kitchen waste work if the base was put into pure clay soil? Does there need to be a capacity for fluid to soak away Will I just create a permanent sump of rotting food? If it is the latter I'd better sell the cone.

It depends how clayey is the soil. Yes it needs to have somewhere to drain the fluids to, of course.
If it's in pure clay, then you may have a problem, but otherwise I would have thought you would be ok.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
