No Buying Unnecessary Toiletries January 2020 31st Dec 19 at 6:28 PM
Here we go again for another month. As usual this initial post has been shamelessly copied from the many previous months. A big thank you to, er me, sstevo19 for starting us off last month.

Welcome all newbies and regulars to this very friendly and chatty thread where we give lots of lovely tips on how to use up your stash and lots of support and encouragement if you need them.

Keep up the pampering and keep down the spending: let's make the naughty step an empty and lonely place this month (rather than one so long that it can be seen from space)! Will this be the month when the "usual suspects" rein it in a bit? Let's see..... (but I doubt it!)

Remember - those products do nothing for you while they are stashed in drawers, boxes and cupboards!

We are eternally grateful to Katie Clampet who set up this fab challenge in January 2010. Here's her original challenge post:

"No buying any new toiletries, cosmetics, perfume etc... until I have used up ALL the ones I already have. I got a huge amount of (really nice) stuff for Christmas but I am going to resist the urge to browse Boots, Asda, Superdrug etc, and pop another tub of cream, face scrub, shampoo or conditioner into my basket. I reckon the stuff I have will last me until possibly June. I have decided that the money I save I will put into my special holiday account. Anyone else?"

Lots of us have taken part in the challenge over the past few months (and some of us even years!!) and are making great progress in reducing our stashes and unnecessary/excessive spending.

Regulars can ignore this, but a quick resume is always helpful for newbies:

Why not add the challenge to your signature as a reminder?

How about taking a bit of time to do a stock-take and see if there are any gaps in your stash that you might need to spend on this month? Some of us set a budget for the month for essential purchases or to help with withdrawal symptoms, others like to go cold-turkey!! Other ideas which some people find useful: Listing everything out so you can cross things off as used to increase the sense of achievement, and putting a sum of money in a pot each time you use up an item to save for something you really want, or simply to assist in making future essential purchases "cash neutral".

Remember the challenge is about making the most of your money, enjoying your products, finding which products really suit you best and are worth buying, giving yourself a well-deserved pampering and breaking the habit of buying for the sake of buying. In money-saving tradition, it should also be about making your products l-a-s-t as long as possible (although the temptation of using an unloved shower gel extravagantly to finish it off is sometimes too much to bear!).

Brand new products (or opened perfume) sell well on eBay.

Unsuitable products can be repurposed and used for other jobs (shower gel/shampoo as handwash etc).

Some items can be returned to certain stores for exchange (for essential items or gifts!!) without a receipt.

Unwanted items can be recycled as gifts or for gift hampers (saving the money you'd have spent on gifts).

Unsuitable items can be donated to charity or a local women's refuge as mentioned earlier

It helps to avoid the places where temptation lurks for you; be it QVC, Boots, Body Shop, email newsletter, the supermarket toiletries aisles, Grabbit board, online toiletries browsing, seductive department store beauty counter offers etc. Remember retailers are making offers and promotions all the time, so there will always be another deal! Honest!

Good luck all for this month and indeed the coming months, and remember to keep your stash lists updated, keep popping in for inspiration and support and to report your UU's and IN's, especially any sales bargains - we want a nosy!

Welcome to all newbies - the more the merrier. Please introduce yourselves so we can welcome you properly! Do de-lurk if you are lurking, this is one of the friendliest threads on MSE.

Oh - and anyone thinking "OMG my stash is FAR bigger than all of theirs, I cant possibly join" - believe you me, we have been doing this challenge for well over a year some of us - you wont scare us, and I can almost guarantee that someone somewhere will have had more and survived.... we are very supportive (and protective - so don't be scared!!) oh - and did we mention that are nosy??!!

    Useful abbreviations and jargon!

    WBA - Will Buy Again
    UU - Use Ups
IN - Self explanatory - stuff you've gained into your stash - warning: lines may be given out for unnecessary purchases or you may be sent to the naughty step!
NBI - A non-bought item such as a present, gift with purchase or free sample
WNBA - Will Not Buy Again!
Glitch - when a shop/online store make a pricing mistake so you end up paying less or even get freebies!
PYN(M/T/W/Th/F/Sa/Su) DELETE AS APPROPRIATE! - Paint Your Nails Monday/Tuesday...... it allows everyone to try and finish those dastardly nail varnishes with group support! You can never be too groomed for this thread. Also see PY(T)N... - for toenails!
Splutterer - the stage where an item is nearing the end of it's life and spluttering - also the most annoying and seemingly never ending stage!
GWP - Gift With Purchase - a sample or mini sized item
HG - Holy Grail - this is the product you would go back for time and time again, it does the job brilliantly, and is either economical, or so fantastic price becomes no object!
NPI - Near Purchasing Incident (OMG we all have those!)
LHJ - Long Haul Job - for those products - love 'em or hate 'em - that never seem to end no matter how often you use them
PRCP - Pink Rose Candle Philosophy inspired by Erma Bombeck who said: 'If I had my life to live over again I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose that melted in storage'. Don't keep things 'for best' or 'for a special occasion'. That day never arrives. Give the best to yourself now and enjoy it. (Thanks to McCulloch29 for introducing this thought provoking sentiment to us)
GA - for an out that was given away to charity, as a present, or "just because" rather than binned or UU
TA - for an out that was thrown away due to going off (generally as it has been lurking at the back of a stash since time immemorial) or for any other reason such as a broken container or spillage
PP - Project Pan: a list of specific items targeted to be used up

If anyone can think of any more we can add to the list so newbies won't be intimidated by our jargon!

    Graduates

Here is a list of our lovely, fragrant ladies who have polished and pampered their way through their products and managed to get their toiletries stash under control. Ladies - congratulations, you are an inspiration to the rest of us, xx . Thanks also to InaPickle who suggested we start the Graduate list. To join the list of graduates let us know by posting that you are graduating in big colourful letters, that way the OP can easily spot you and add you to the list, or better still - PM the OP as the thread can move really quickly! You may also wish to add how many products you have used up during the challenge. Good luck ladies! xx

Superdrug Hand Rescue Balm 75ml - this was kept by the kitchen sink to use after cleaning up, it was nice enough, the only reason I WNBA is the plastic.

I really do need to just buy what is good and I like rather than dither and buy cheaper products because they might be good!

    3 out today Used up

    Bath bomb
    Superdrug satsuma shower gel 100ml
    Tresemme shampoo 100ml

Soaked my gels off today ready to be redone tomorrow. My salon charges £10 to remove so I bought acetone, foil wraps and pads last year to use as overtime this will save a fortune. Only my second time removing myself and happy enough

Andrea gentle eye make up remover pads. 75 in the tub. Got another tub that I just opened. I thought it might be more effective to use these rather than cotton and eye makeup remover stuff. Once it's finished, not rebuying. I just can't seem to get rid of an oily film in my after using these.

    Tossing:

Benefit mini They're Real mascara. Just do not like the brush. It's got these two little spiky bits near the tip. I'm worried I'm going to scratch the eye. Plus it's clumpy. Maybe it's just a bad batch?

Liz Earle Eyebright 50ml - I just don't see the point of this product so I gave it to DD to try and has made her skin bright red so we have poured it down the sink.

I agree about buying what you know works rather than trying everything and falling for the claims. I've been using a basic and natural routine for quite some time now and am finding that my skin is supple and bouncy and looks healthy, the cocktail of chemicals in products can't be good for us even more so when we layer one on top of the other. I hope to move to more natural makeup eventually but using what I have will be a long job.

I'm back in - albeit belatedly!

A couple of UU's to report straight away:
A Dove shower cream - it was bought post christmas last year in Boots as part of a gift set in the 70% off sale I think so was a bargain. As with most of those sorts of things, it was OK, did the job, smelt nice, and I'd buy it again if it was suitable bargainous!
A mini conditioner that came with my hair colour. I usually set these aside to put in my travel toiletries now as I prefer a heavier duty conditioner once I've used this one once immediately post-colour. I will acquire more as I buy more hair colour.
A Nutrisse hair colour - my usual purple one. I buy these 2 at a time as Superdrug usually has them for 2 for £9, and I will be buying again later this month.

I've also put a mini Clinique mild liquid facial soap into use as I didn't have a wash-off cleanser on the go currently, so that is getting used in the mornings while my S&G and No 7 ones get alternated at night.

I've got a splutterer too - my Olay BB cream tinted moisturiser which is my absolute HG product is on the way out. I have another in the stash though - in fact I may even have 2!

Also got a few in's - the S&G Star Gift tin, as I expected, plus a big bottle of a rather lovely smelling Avon shower cream (it smells of chocolate!) plus a couple of lip balm - no issue having loads of those as I carry one in every coat pocket and they do get used!) All of the above were christmas presents anyway.

Hello all, it's nice to see some familiar names still posting here. I haven't been on the MSE forums for some time but used to participate in this challenge for a couple of years. I still have a lot of toiletries but have managed to organise them and I rarely buy these days. I'll try and join in again.

    Welcome back Babafette!

I took great delight in removing a S&G Clean On Me from the stash this morning and putting it into use! If I actually had a HG shower gel/cream this would be it I think - it smells amazing, and lathers beautifully, without being at all drying. Just a pleasure to use.

I got giddy this morning as I hit pan in the matte shadow in my Smashbox Full Exposure pallette. Went to find my post about the Finish 7 by Spring and only then realised it is no longer in the Project! Never mind, any pan is good right?

Evening gang, like Babafette I've been off the forums for a while, but I used to be part of this challenge.

    Count me in for 2020.

I had my bathroom done in October and all my toiletries are now sat in a couple of boxes in my bedroom.
I really want to start using them up.

    3 UUs today:-

Boots Nail Polish remover. Bought a replacement bottle from Tesco over the Christmas break.

I am calling two nail polishes done:-

OPI Sparrow me the Drama. Am sad as I love this colour.

OPI Samoan Sand (mini). Not a fan. It made my nails look yellow so I used it as a base coat under other polishes.

I have some OUTs to report also.

Yesterday I posted out two tubes of Tweak'd hair treatment. Once the Buyer confirms receipt I'll order my Amika Bombshell Spray. My hairdresser is coming tonight and will probably finish off what I have.

I've just agreed an offer on EBay for a Benefit Dandelion blush so have that with me today ready to post. I asked MRM for Benefit Bad Gal Bang mascara for Christmas. He bought me a kit containing this, the blush, an eyebrow product and primer. Said it was cheaper to buy the kit than the mascara alone and said he didn't mind me selling anything on that I don't want. I'll keep the rest but have a Dandelion blush anyway.

Have an OPI Nail Envy on Ebay that has been bid on and also have a Bare Minerals lip lacquer that has garnered no interest so far eitehr on Ebay or Facebook.

    Welcome back Babafette and Whatatwit.

EH I purchased the same hair dye on a 2 for £9 offer in Boots just before Christmas, I've used one and have now decided I may just let it all grow out and be my natural colour - grey and all.

    uu

Garnier Nutrisse Conditioner - the one that comes with the colour.

    TA

One mini Nails Inc special effects glitter polish and one full size Nails inc glitter polish, both have gone very glue like. They are in a bag in my garage with things for the tip, they have to go in with the hazardous waste there and not in your own bin.

    GA

6 x Nail Polishes to DD and 5 donated to the charity shop. They seemed to be mainly purples which I didn't like, I like aubergine and plum colours but not purple.

I have a bag in the bathroom cupboard with empties that can't be recycled in my bin and these will be taken to the Body Shop when I have quite a few - it's a special trip to one in the train station so I will let them build up.

I have put several bottles of polish, mainly minis, into a bag and I will be doing a Project Polish to use them up.

Now up to 5/10 for the month - I'm currently relaxing with some gel under-eye pads on. Fresh from the fridge they're so soothing! I've got a few more to use up but I'll definitely be repurchasing when I've run out!

1 x Aussie Calm the Frizz 3 minute Miracle. I've always loved Aussie products, but this has been my favourite so far - I'll definitely buy again!

1 x Imperial Leather Mermazing Shower gel - such an amazing smell, I'll definitely buy again!

1 x hotel body lotion (it lost it's scent so I have just been smothering my feet with it at night!)

Up to 9/10 for the month now

EH I purchased the same hair dye on a 2 for £9 offer in Boots just before Christmas, I've used one and have now decided I may just let it all grow out and be my natural colour - grey and all.

Olay Total Effects Touch of Foundation BB cream [HG] - will definitely buy again but for now I have another in the stash which I will get out tonight.

Splutterer (well - as much as a pot of something can splutter!)
Clinique Moisture Surge is nearing its end. [HG] - I stopped using this for a good few years due to cost but have never found anything as good so re-bought last year on that basis. I will be re-buying but will be waiting for a Clinque Bonus Time offer at Boots.

Back for the No Buying Toiletries challenge. I pledge to only buy when I run out of a product that is not already in my stash no matter what wonderful emails land in in my Inbox or threads I read on MSE re: glitches!
