Morrisons .. massive data breach by one of their staff BUT ....

Morrisons loses data leak challenge

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-45943735

A member of Morrisons staff stole sensitive data and put
it on the internet

This now opens the door to ask all supermarkets and
anyone who employ parking companies, how safe is the data
collected by parking companies in their car parks, supplied to
them by the DVLA

What measures do parking companies undertake to
protect the motorist.from theft of data ?

A good case to ask the DVLA what measures they have
taken when they provide personal data for £2.50
to a parking company that the parking company's
system is fully protected against theft of data.

This is a valid reason to opt-out of the DVLA providing
information to parking companies

Thoughts folks

    Hardly comparable.

What info is the PPC and/or the DVLA going to have on you? Registration number, name and adress of the registered keeper. You aren't going to get very far stealing someones ID with that little lot.

The Morrisons employee on the other hand had and disclosed names, addresses, bank account details and salaries (and probably NI numbers as well).

Point missed ...... PPC's and debt collectors accept credit
cards ....... Credit card + Name + Address is enough
With credit/debit cards they request the 3 digit security
number on the back of the card

It is very relevant that the DVLA sell name and address
data to companies for £2.50 but the DVLA has no idea
of the security of that company
So when the motorists pays a PPC or Debt collector,
and as we only see the tip of the iceberg here, there
are millions of payments made every year probably
to companies who have no real protection in place, either
the DVLA protects people or allows people to opt-out

As we know, the DVLA sell on information without
    due care and protection

If Morrisons and many other large companies can fall
foul of this, we cannot trust PPC's to be better
    than them.

SO YES ... it is very comparable and certainly a reason
why the motorist should opt-out of the DVLA

Off-topic ... can you refrain from using that posting style please? It's very off-putting and difficult to read properly. Please only use the ENTER key when you actually need to start a new paragraph.

Agreed. Everything looks like a (really bad) poem.

Interesting ? you are saying then to use the width of the text
box ...... I find that this can actually drop lines ....

    Like on your suggestion

    security
number on the back of the card.

You seem to be advocating paying the cowboys, am I reading that right?

Not again! The DVLA aren't "selling" anything, they're providing information as required by legislation passed by parliament and the charge is to cover the provision of that information and dealing with associated matters. They're civil servants, they can't pick and choose what laws they should implement and which they shouldn't.

You want the law changed then lobby your MP. But I think you'll be whistling in the wind if you think there'll be any sort of opt-out.

ME advocating to pay the cowboys ????
Such a silly statement given the posts I make on here
    Do read it properly

Call it whatever you wish, the DVLA collect money
for providing data ... period. The Data is given to
unknowns who will in turn collect credit card info

You may whistle in the wind if you wish, surprise, the rest of
    us don't
