If the dog was attacking me, I would turn round and kick it hard.

If the dog was just sniffing round, I would look for the owners and ask them to put it on a leash and get it under control.

What is the matter with people (specifically the OP in this case). Were you bitten? No? Move on.

So I presume that you would also "move on" if a drunken thug walked up and threatened to punch you or smash a bottle over you head but didn't actually manage to carry out the attack?

How about if a driver swerved their car towards you in an attempt to intimidate you?
Provided that they didn't actually hit you or your car, you'd be okay with their actions and would simply "move on"?

    Back to the dog.
Next time it might just decide to take a lump out of someone who wasn't able to "move on" quickly enough.

Oh, don't be silly. The OP asked for opinions, I gave mine.

I always remember the advice given to me years ago -
If a Rottweiler starts to "hump" your leg, fake an orgasm!

Ask the owner to restrain. Take photos of owner. Plaster over social media. Speak to dog warden. Snapping at your heels need muzzling or keeping on lead.

If a large dog intends you harm, it is not going to be snapping at your heels it's going to be firmly attached to other parts of your anatomy.
Was it a collie trying to round you up?

Best thing is to stay calm, slow movements, don't flap around and call the owner if around.

I'd probably flap, scream, then cry.... been attacked (properly) too many times to take chances... and I'm small.

    Kennel Club advice to children

    If standing - be tree

If lying - be a stone.

In other words keep totally still and do not look at the dog so you are boring.

Or if you're my father's girlfriend (who is petrified of dogs), you wave your hands around and make squeeking noises, which makes you MUCH more exciting to the (very docile) dog!
