You are not missing something. Most of the time it is common that connecting flights are cheaper than direct flights. Many people prefer direct flights so that's one of the reason for higher prices.

We always stay on Strip so can't really help re: the hotel (Orleans, maybe?), but I'm mad jealous about John Fogerty. I always just miss the good acts in Vegas and only the dross like Bruno whatshisface is on when we're there. I did manage to see Peter Frampton last trip though.

What are your dates? Tuscany right next door has a fridge and you can ask for a microwave. Dining area, sofa, desk for the computer, shower and bathtub in the bathroom. A lot of their rooms are renovated too. We watched them doing it from our Platinum balcony.

I think Platinum is having ideas above it’s station lately. The prices when available have been a bit silly.

That’s when SEMA are in town. Second largest convention they have in Vegas at over 160,000 attendees. That’s probably why a lot of places are expensive or sold out.

If they have had bed bugs, I bet they have had a thorough clean up. We have never had a problem there.

What hotel did you end up staying in in the end? Did you have plans whilst there, or literally just a bed for the night? :)

I'll just qualify my comments while sitting waiting in Houston to come back to London.

It was our third visit (10 years between each) and while the initial impact 20 years ago was mind-blowing (we arrived after dark from the Hoover Dam to the amazing light show) it's really not changed much at all. If anything it's got worse as the atmosphere has gone from the casinos with the slots changing from dispensing coins. There are more lowlifes and scalpers walking up and down the strip and the prices have shot up. Can anyone really enjoy the sad spectacle of the poor drugged up girls dressed in showgirl outfits for tourists?

We stayed at the Treasure Island as it was relatively cheap ($89 Inc), whereas 20 years ago we stayed at MGM Grand (brand new and nice - unlike now) for a little over $36. In the same time $5 buffets have become $50 buffets.

All in all, I still can't see how it can occupy anyone for more than a couple of nights (one for the strip, one for downtown). Otherwise you'd be better off spending your precious hard earned on a National Park pass and taking the time to see the real beauty that surrounds thus outdated Mecca of excess and waste.

Not a fan then. I’m sorry you wasted your money.

The Stage Door casino is a short walk down past The Cromwell on Flamingo Road...opposite side of the road from the bottom end of Ballys Hotel.
Looks a grubby little place from the outside...and to be honest it’s not a lot better inside, but you usually find an interesting person or two to have a crack with...and the beers usually start at $1-2 dollars a bottle.
Then just a short walk to Ellis Island for some cheap gambling and a steak special..who says Vegas can’t be done on the cheap.

We always stop in to Stage Door for a $1 beer. Their hot dogs are good too. Can’t beat a dive bar for a good crack. You find all sorts in there. Business people in Vegas for a convention to construction workers on their way home. Be aware that they card everyone at defiance busy times.
