A brilliant wee museum, has a super collection of art including the Scottish Colourists and there are a couple of Jack Vettriano's paintings. The museum cafe is excellent too. Entry is free and right next to the railway station. ( That reminds me - the museum was featured in the recent TV series where Michael Portillo was travelling round Britain by train; he was looking at McTaggart paintings that once belonged to his grandfather). Would highly, highly recommend.
  • The Library and Museum of Freemasonry Charitable Trust is based at Freemasons' Hall Great Queen Street London WC2B 5AZ. It is open weekdays 10a.m. to 5p.m. It houses 50,000 books and a huge collection of pottery, glassware, furniture, jewellry, Masonic regalia and much more. Regular exhibitions feature such as Trench Art, Friendly Society artefacts, Masonic Regalia etc. A bonus is the opportunity to join one of the guided tours to the whole of the stunning building which has featured on TV as the HQ of MI5 in "Spooks" and in Poirot, The Professionals and many of film and TV dramas.

And NO ! Freemasonry is NOT a Secret Society. Visit and find out for yourself.

There will be tons of great ones to add but here is a few I can think of just now

You seem to have missed these Glasgow museums (all the council ones are free!)

The Burrell Collection, Pollok Country Park - a must see. They do free guided tours as well
Gallery of Modern Art, Royal Exchange Square
Provand's Lordship, Castle Street - the oldest house in Glasgow. Good day out combined with the Cathedral and the museum of Religious Life
And also the excellent Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery
There's a free Zoology museum too in the uni but I've never actually been in it

The Stewartry Museum in Kirkcudbright is a nice one - they've built up a really interesting collection, mainly local and social history. If I remember rightly there was a box for donations but entry is free.

The !!!!!! Institute in Kilmarnock is a free museum and art gallery. Again lots of local interest stuff like shipbuilding, weaving and Robert Burns. They also have paintings by the Scottish colourists and a Peter Howson.

Impressions Gallery is a free gallery located in the heart of Bradford city centre and is one of the UK's independent leading venues for photography.

The exhibitions change regularly so there's always something different to see as well as lots of free events and activities throughout the year. I'm afraid I can't add links to the gallery's website as the forum won't let me as a new user, however if you google 'Impressions Gallery Bradford' it will be the top link.

The gallery is located on the first floor of the new leisure complex in Centenary Square and is immmediately behind the BBC Big Screen so this is your landmark to look out for. If you walk to the left of the big screen you will come to the glass entrance doors for the gallery on the ground floor.

Some great free museums missed from St Andrews.

MUSA (Museum of the University of St Andrews), found at 7a The Scores, is fantastic, shows the 600 year history of the University and student life through the ages. It showcases some spectacular collections, including three mediaeval maces, some amazing artworks some unique scientific instruments.

St Andrews Museum, located in Kinburn Park, has an interesting local history display giving an A to Z of the town and has a temporary exhibition space on the first floor. It also has a really good and reasonably priced cafe.

Finally, the St Andrews Preservation Trust Museum on North Street gives an insight into local life through time and has a beautiful garden, well worth a visit.

East of England free museums guide - please include Chelmsford Museum. It's in a lovely setting and has free entry and parking and, young or old, you will love the bees - from inside one of the rooms you can watch them come and go through a window where they have a special glass case so you can see them 'working'. Chelmsford is also the birthplace of radio.

There's a vending machine or you can picnic in the park or walk/bus in to town where there are lots of eateries. I've pasted the information in direct from cbc website but unfortunately as a newbie I can't post links. Go to Chelmsford Borough Council > Leisure, Parks and Tourism to get started.

    Chelmsford Museums Service

The Borough Council runs two museums in Oaklands Park, off Moulsham Street, Chelmsford - the Chelmsford Museum and the Essex Regiment Museum. Entry is free.

Chelmsford Museum was founded in 1835 by the members of the Chelmsford Philosophical Society and started life in the parlour of Chelmsford Gaol, then situated by the Stone Bridge in the centre of the town

The Museum has now doubled in size so as well as all the old favourites, there is a major new gallery devoted to Chelmsford's unique industrial heritage called Bright Sparks, a new Essex Regiment Museum, Essex Yeomanry display, community life galleries, art displays and a large temporary exhibition space.
