ok , you have got a few problems (vista) I CANNOT believe the drive (empty) is only 40g , and with vista loaded it shows 38g free , so at this point I,m struggling to help
I would suggest that its more than 5 yrs old , please tell us the make and model0 -

the 40g hardrive is NOT empty, it has all windows etc stuff installed on it.

I do not believe your existing drive is 40GB, To find the disk capacity, in explorer right click Local disk C: , click Properties .0

I just check the spec's of optiplex gx520 , find it hard to believe but it does come with a 40GB Hard Drive !!!

to the OP:
yes you can fit the new hard drive , and make it boot from it , BUT you will have to do some work (cloning disks) etc ,
I think you might have to find a small 12 yr old child that is a computer "nerd" to help , I find lots of red bull helps!0 -
