ATM 38gb is main 500gb is empty want to have 500gb as main and 38gb as empty sorry if this sounds basic to most but still learning lol.
many thanks for reading and for any help
Im now a mum of 4 children. but dont know how to change my username.lol

i need to transfer all data from a 38g harddrive to 500gb harddrive, so the computer works and runs from 500gb. without a 38 gb being there.

ok ,you can move the files (pics / vids / music) over to the new drive , then delete them from the original drive , or set to reloading windows from scratch on the new drive

I suggest unless you are knowledgeable , just to move them over , and carry on booting from your original drive , will this suffice?

Google for disk imaging programs - eg www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/backup-your-computer-by-making-an-image-of-your-hard-drive/

It will copy all thhe data onto the new drive so you can use and boot from the new drive. backup anything that is really important eksehere - eg. flash drive just in case it goes wrong (unlikely).

As above, if it's just the space you need and can leave both drives in the machine, I'd go with Enfield Freddy's option

ok , how old is the computer , and what operating system are you using , win xp , 7 , 8

it must be very old if there is only a 40g hard drive

do you have any disks that came with the computer ?

edit: the drive CANNOT be a 40 g if you have windows loaded , !!! , what make , model is it?
