Poorly car :(
Options
My Peugeot 107 has over the past week had an engine warning light come on.
The clutch has also started vibrating.
We've taken it to 2 different garages who say the warning light is to do with the catalytic converter.
Has anyone got any advice on haggling/how to know you aren't being ripped off?
I don't know anyone in the area who can give me advice unfortunately.

Find a local garage, not a dealer or Kwik Fit/National operation0

Use a local garage and try using second parts to keep costs down0

Was looking at local garages, problem is I don't know anyone in this area so don't know if they are good or not!
Was going to buy parts too but don't want to get the wrong ones if you see what I mean.
It's a minefield.0 -
maybe if you are so paranoid about being ripped if you put where you live someone might advise further?
what gets me is you say two garages advised cat
did they do this with divining sticks or did they plug evil lectric things into the gizards of your car to come up with their prognosis?0 -
-
Yes they did use the stick thing but I did leave the car with them so have no idea what they did?
Both switched the engine warning light off and one guy said that there was loads of water somewhere and this was causing the warning light to be on. He asked if we'd driven through a puddle- we haven't so not sure what that's about.
I live in Hull/York area.0 -
the light means fault so its not a good idea to run round with it on
if they put the leccy bits into its gizzards this come up with codes steering them to the fault
one person you say mentioned water well we've had some this week so its quite possible you have had thermal shock on a lambda sensor these plug into the cat and effect fuel used
if left broken for long enough it would indeed kill the cat but telling you you need a catalytic converter at this stage is pure scaremongering unless it has shattered it with the cold water the first action would be to change the lambda if this is the problem
cant help in your area but i can see your dilemma
basically you need a code read (scan) of the ecu and get them to put on your receipt the codes stored before they willy nilly remove them to turn the light off, these places doing this you really need to keep away from
post up the codes here and we will try and steer you to a solution might be tomorrow though0 -
OBD scanners to read the fault code/reset the light yourself can be had for £15 or less on amazon etc if you don't trust what the garages are saying. What are they saying is the fault, the cure, and for how much? Have they charged you for diagnosis?
Has the light come back on after it was cleared?!!

yeah the light has come back on since they did that.
ok, so do I go to a different garage for the ecu reading?0 -

they are saying to change clutch as it is vibrating more than normal- been quoted £320 for parts and labour at one (215 just labour), £458 at another (316 just labour).
Also the catalytic converter apparently which would be 250 (or 55 just labour) at one or between 288-324 at another.
so approx 500 for both.
I did not get charged for diagnosis although that sort of worries me as they may not be right as it doesn't matter to them?0
