Well done Belfastgirl - great progress:T:T:T:T
Still haven't turned on my freezer or spare fridge, but been abit naughty with the TD (flippin rain) but still doin' well. (By the way I do like my TD balls.:D) Mr SMF2 has put a light in the cupboard under the stairs so I can read the meter easily - ahhhh bless.0 -
And another 2 appliances guesstimated.
Our pizza making (oven on top heat for 40 mins cos the stones need to be heated through) is costing us 2kwh/ 25p a go - though a lot cheaper than dominos. I do other cooking with it most times when it's on already.
And the dishwasher is costing about 0.6kwh/7.6p per use on its fast wash setting which is pretty much fine for what we need. Well worth it!
Contacting the window guys tomorrow0 -
Hi 'lecciemeteritis' sufferers! I have now found the Moneysaving Carbon Club and joined up - not sure what happens now, but please keep me informed, as I'm now going into week 4 of my readings there
I did get around to checking the rates I get charged. There's a standing charge of 20.81p per day, then 12.107p per kwh during daytime hours and 5.226p per kwh during off peak. If I adapted a completely topsy turvy lifestyle, I could get quite cheap electricity!I should add that the above figures are based on the July/August rates. These rates are approx 13.5% higher than the previous (April/May) rates, although the 20.81p per day standing charge doesn't seem to have changed (yet!).

The less I spend, the more I can afford.

Hi guys
Managed to finally check out my bugbear - the permanently on though rarely used applemac desktop computer. In fact I don't have that much to complain about - in sleep mode it uses just under 0.1KWH per day which over a month is only 3kwh so I guess I can let that one go. The only thing I can think of now guzzling electric is my inherited fridge freezer. It's a monster of a thing so i can't figure how to get it pulled out to check energy consumption. In fact it might even be wired into the wall behind there. Anyone got any tips on getting it out - I suspect cleaning the coils and pulling it out a bit more from the wall would make a difference in terms of energy consumed....for info it's about 6ft tall and easily 2ft by 2ft in depth and width...0 -
Hi Belfastgirl
I'd definitely try to get the freezer emptied and defrosted then pull it out from the wall when it's that bit lighter. I think there's a minimum gap that should be maintained to allow air circulation around the coils and the amount of electricity consumed will depend on the temperature set on the actual freezer and the surrounding room temperature. It then should maintain the temperature more economically when it's kept filled. Someone said to me to use plastic containers of water in both the fridge and the freezer to help keep them full when the food's going down.

thanks NYK, I do try to keep it reasonably full but this is a good reason to try harder. I had a conversation with mr BG this morning about bugs and germs under it which is a much more successful device than mentioning energy saving :rotfl: so I think we might try to get it emptied and pulled out over the weekend - just need to dig out my freezer bags. I then have to get rid of him to attach the energy monitor for a while...maybe the threat of cleaning the coils would do this...
I also had my window quote done - around £480 plus vat for the sitting room bay windows  but the guy said that people do notice a major cut in energy bills so I'm going to go ahead and get it done. Mr BG has agreed to it on the basis that he won't be there or have anything to do with itbut that's okay....
BTW a 60 degree wash costs me 10.5p. Ginga did you find anything interesting with your monitor?0 -
Oops I'm hovering just above 4 at the moment on electricity consumption. I've had the heating on a couple of times for an hour and quite a heavy wash week, for me anyway. The heating seems to take a fair bit of power though its a gas condensing boiler but the pump must take a fair bit of electricity too.
Consumption so far this quarter, 70 days, is:
Gas: 5 units
Electricity: 255
So still below 4 units per day on average.
Over 90 days I will need to keep daily consumption down to 60 units for 20 days or 3 units per day to stay within an average of 3.5 for electricity. You're right this is addictive.
Right off to make more savings.:j0 -
