Who does the food shop in your household?

I wanted to let you into a land mark event in my relationship.
Today my OH did the monthly food shop on his own, after a week of living off burgers plus beans/mash/catfood got too much even for him.
I had visions of returning home to find the cupboards stacked with beer and crisps, but he has since contacted me in a state of great excitement to tell me he did it in 35mins, spent £69, and only forgot three things - which all happen to be the fish and seafood items I requested and he hates, hmmm.
He even talked me through the fridge, freezers and cupboards to report back on all his bargains.
"Value mince down to 50p! I'm a clever boy, aren't I?"
He is 30, by the way, bless.

I feel bad for doubting he could do it. Together we usually take over an hour and spend between £80-100.

My OH hates food shopping so much that he refuses to take me! I don't drive, so order online.
He has done one shop on his own, and didn't buy any staples, just ready meals. He now asks me to do a shop for him even if I'm away!Stay-at-home, attached Mummy to a 23lb 10oz, 11 month old baby boy.0 -
Just wondering if it will be you or the OH doing the cooking on what he has bought - in my experience it is easy to do a low cost shop but you then find you're scraping the barrel for meal ideas before the week's done.
However, I'm glad to see you're training the OH well - if only I could do the same!!!
This week I decided instead of doing my usual weekly shop at Asda I would try buying from my local shops - I managed to spend £42 buying items on special offer instead of my usual £70+ (there are 4 of us) - only time will tell if I have bought enough or if I will end up going out again to supplement the food stocks.******
As the kids are off school from this weekend for about 9 weeks:eek: (we live in N.I.) it's going to be interesting managing on less anyway!!!!!
Keep us posted on how you manage this week anyway.
***** Have now spent a further £6 - total of £48 with only Tuesday & Wednesday left to go before usual shopping day - still big saving on £70+ & food offers have been good in local Spar and Centra.

I've had to ban Mr P from doing the shopping - I can't cope with him phoning me every five minutes to ask where things are! Now if I'm not able to go myself I either do it online or get DD2 to do it online for me.

We go together once a week and it takes about 30 mins, and we pop there (5 mins away) during the week on the way home from work. Mostly me as I'm home first but he can be trusted and brings back nice surprises.:A0

easier to do it on my own. If i go with oh we spend ages wondering round. I like to be in and out. If oh goes on his own we usually end up with something we don't want!!:T0

I do most of the cooking, but he is getting quite handy.
As I work two jobs we established it wasn't fair that I cook every night, but he is self-employed and works very long hours, plus is rennovating our first house.
So, most night me and the slow cooker whip up tea, but once/twice a week he makes something.
He's getting quite good - pinches ideas from Gordon Ramsay's website for basic, tasty grub and can now do shepherd's pie, spag bol, roast dinner, sloppy Joes.
I will report back however if I am on starvation rations by next week.DEBT FREE! Sep '08/£9,800 in Oct '06 :beer:0 -
I've done probably 90% of it - even when we do it online its me that is sat with the laptop while my wife chips in the occasional suggestion. Its mainly habit - I drive to work and when we were first married used to call in at the supermarket on the way home - she was walking or getting the train so it made more sense for me to get it. As I also tend to do most of the cooking it also makes sense for me to get what I need to cook!
Now we have kids the after work shopping has gone out of the window so I can get home in time to bath the kids, but I still end up either picking up shopping at lunchtime (again I'm nearer a supermarket) or sometimes taking the boys to Asda out of town on a Saturday morning (the choice in Bath itself is dreadful). Do get the odd strange look off the checkout assistants tho with a 3yo and a 1yo and no obvious sign of mum!
Funnily enough I hate taking the OH shopping as well - because she goes so rarely she likes to stop and look at all stuff which slows the whole process down no end - I know where everything is and can do it fast enough to stop the boys getting fractious.
Just to redress the balance I'm useless at being tidy before anyone wonders if I'm from a parallel universe!Adventure before Dementia!0 -

95% of the time I go on my own, much quicker and cheaper, I don't end up with a trolley loads of stuff that we 'might' need!!Breast Cancer Now 100 miles October 2022 100 / 100miles

I'm on shopping strike at the moment! I got sick and tired of doing the weekly shop and then my OH deciding he doesn't want to eat XYZ even though it's about to go out of date etc. So I tried sitting him down and doing a meal plan for the week full of foods he chose himself but that didn't work either. So now I'm on strike. At the moment he's picking some pasta or something else quick and easy up on his way home most nights (or ordering takeaway) and complaining about having to buy the food. This has been going on for the last three months already! I keep on telling him that rather than complaining about it he should sit down and do an online shop in the hope that once he's entirely responsible for providing the food he might actually eat it! He's 35 and I'm having to treat him like a child lol.0
