looks like they may have slashed the price on some staple items, but you will notice they have increased the price of other shopping items to compensate.........so yet again the winner is not the buyer but the supermarkets.
yes - the goal of a price war/predatory strategy is not to make things cheaper for consumers, but to put a squeeze on competitors and discourage them from competing as vigorously so the predator can then raise prices above their previous level and recoup the amount they lost from selling below cost.
Having said that, supermarkets in the UK are an oligopoly and it would be very unlikely that one supermarket would be able to take out another through a predatory strategy; the companies involved are too large and have lots of capital (although Safeway would be a good example of a fairly powerful player which got squeezed beyond a level it could cope with). They probably hope that the consumers they win over through this price war will stick with them even when the price goes back up even though that price may be higher than elsewhere, and at the end of the day they'll all settle back to the price point the items were at before, or perhaps a few pence higher.
Price wars can be a good thing for consumers as long as we realise that we don't owe the supermarkets any loyalty - they're out to make money and we're out to get maximum value for money. These are naturally conflicting goals, but they keep the market working.0 -

I usually buy Asda Smart price 3 pack 200ml fruit juice for my son to take to school. It usually costa 43p but this week went up to £1.43. I thought i was seeing things,so got price check. How can theyjustify this increase. Their own Asda brand is still 69p, so i think they are just out to catch people who don't look at price because they assume smart price is supposed to be cheaper.things may go up, but the Smart price fruit juice has gone up by 232%. I think we should all bombard Asda customer service email to let them know they've been sussed.
This is still 43p at our 2 ASDAs.
There is an "old" price of £1.43 but it's on "Roll Back" to 43p

the 50p things were still available at Asda today.
So the Piel de Sapo melons are still 50p and there's a coupon in the current Asda magazine (the one with strawberry desserts on the front) for 30p off one of these. Got a couple of lovely big melons for 20p each, can't be bad. :T0 -
