My mum got caught out by this when she booked some coach tickets through National Express website just before Christmas!

It has been cancelled now thankfully!

Shopper Discounts & Rewards continue to operate this [TEXT DELETED BY FORUM TEAM]. I purchased an item from Easylife Lifestyle Solutions in December 2009 and clicked that I wished to obtain the promised (no strings?) £15 discount voucher. This led to my credit card details being passed to Shopper Discounts who proceeded to deduct two amounts of £10 from my credit card. Initially I was told that I should have read the small print - difficult when their emails were in my spam folder - and only after I threatened to report them to the Office of Fair Trading have I now received an assurance that my debits are to be refunded. Watch this space!

My son got caught by Shopper Discounts in September. I've cancelled his account with him today online, plus phoned them to explain he had no idea about the fees and said I'd contact Financial Authority (not sure which one I was thinking of) and they said they will credit the 3 months - we'll see if they do.

We have had a long talk about being really careful on the internet and using online banking very regularly to keep a check on things. Think I'll get him to report his card as lost and get a new one issued too.

  • i realised a few times this shopper discounts... never took notice as thought maybe something i bought of a site i.e like asos and maybe thats just how it appears on statment. noticed it again so rang the bank they told me what it was and told me to ring them, rung them cancelled and worked out that they 150 pound out of me since 2009 asked for money bck they said i could have £30 .. and would send me a claim letter... so will see xx

ps know i wouldnt have knowingly joined... or filled out a form with bank details
  • oh yeah and the site was onlinegolf x
  • They have had about £150.00 out of my account as it was a business card I have a lot of traffic through so overlooked a £10.00 monthly payment.
It transpires through my bank this was through Expedia and when I contacted this 'Company' I was refunded £30.00 only and told I'd be sent a form. No form has been sent . Instead they direct you to their website where you have to print it off and mail to them after completion. As this is time consuming and requires details of membership start date and membership number ( none of which I know or have the time or inclination to track down as I never knowingly became a 'member'. Why should I?) this is deliberately making it awkward to reclaim money which essentially has been stolen through access to card details which were given for another purpose altogether.
I have used their feedback email to inform them that this is theft and note that I have informed them clearly in writing and taken copies which I will pass on to the appropriate governing body. In essence I refute their claim I knowingly became a member or authorised payment of any kind and the onus is on them to return to me my money which they have stolen.

It's worrying reading here of the number of well known companies involved frankly. Expedia is virtually a household name so if companies such as they are guilty of becoming involved in such wholly dubious practise it damages the whole industry of the convenience of Net purchases for absolutely everything.

  • I have had another useless reply from them saying it was Ebookers but I have to download, print and fill in their form before buying a stamp then posting it when they will investigate and reply by - Email!

If I manage to get my money back I'm then going to send them an invoice for administration charges! I'm furious. The tone they take is pretty condescending too.

Anyone worried about how to cancel a continuous credit card payment should just cut up the card and report it lost to the card provider. You'll receive a new card with a different number so any more debits will be refused.
I know I'm quoting an old post but I thought I should point out that this is actually not true; I had my credit card changed due to an unrelated issue, yet the payments still came out under the old card number. The only thing you can do is get in touch with SD&R or whoever is running the scheme and cancel with them.
