Hi Shelley
I wondered how on earth you can make a profit on £30 for your lovely cakes?
I went into town today fully intending to get all the things to make my first sample cake but got nothing. I went to the next sale where they had some gorgeous clothes, but even sale prices added up too much.
I came home instead empty handed and after adding everything up at "sale" prices and nappies on offer - it came to about £28.
It's O.K. if they are just for family and friends etc but the figures don't add up as a small business! HELP!
Sorry - another question; Do you have a problem with buying clothes for different seasons? After looking around I realized everything was summer wear and the customer might be having the baby in winter!
Hi MoonPenny, there will be a fsair amount of profit on a cake of £30. I make a simple 3 tier cake which I will break down the price for you and also the costs involved and also a picture.
I pick up clothes/muslins in bigger packs, mainly prom asda - sleepsuits 3 - £5 so cost £1.66, Muslins 5 - £4 - costs .80 Blanket £3 Vest - 7 - £5 - 71p each scratch mitts - 33p socks - 5 - £2.50 costs 50p
Nappies are generally always on offer I have a set amount of nappies for each cake but when working out the price I used full price not offer price so generally they are 11p each, but I work on the basis they are 11p then if I can get them on offer fantastic. Ribbon 30p a metre (again generally) use approx 2 metres and my butterfly costs 40p locally
3 tier nappy cake I charge £19.99
costs - 33 x huggies nappies - £3.63
1 Muslin - £0.80
1 blanket - £3.00
Sleepsuit -£1.66
Vest - £0.71
socks - £0.50
scratch mitts -£0.33
Ribbon - £0.60
Butterfly - £0.40
Cake board - £0.50
Cellophane - £0.10 a metre (2 metres used) (I buy 25metre rolls)
Costs to make -£11.03
Profit - £8.96
Of course if you are only planning to make one nappy cake then costs vary on clothes. Pointless buying big pasks of clothing etc ... Also some of the clothes and items like that are cheaper elsewhere.
Blankets can be cheaper from Primark as can vests etc. My Muslins I buy from a seller on ebay so work out at approx 30p each but if for any reason the seller has none I use asda/adams etc.
Hope this helps.Raising kids is like being held hostage by midget terrorists0 -
Thanks RustyFlange,
I can see where I am going wrong now - Don't shop at expensive shops obviously! LOL.
Also, I can see that summer / winter won't matter so much when you just buy basic sleepsuits etc and nothing too fancy.
Thanks again for taking the time to list everything for me.0 -

No problem Moonpenny. To be honest the quality of asda's baby clothes is just fine for kids of all ages. Not only that if you wanted to just make one then they do a starter pack in the baby aisle, basically I think the price was £4 or £5 and has 1 sleepsuit, 1 vest, 1 hat, 1 mittens, 1 bootees , 1 bib and possibly something else but not 100% sure but that kind of thing is perfect then get a pack of nappies. I use size 3 so that the cake can be kept looking pretty for a while, I also use 3-6 months baby clothes.Raising kids is like being held hostage by midget terrorists0
