I have been getting these calls for about a week now. I didn't fall for their scare tactics and told them to stop calling or i would get the number blocked. I was then told "You wont be able to block us as our number is witheld..."
I have contacted BT today and they have now activated a trace on my line. If they call again, I have been told to trace the number using 1477, taking note of the date/time and call BT back on 0800 411422. BT will then call the company and tell them not to ring again.
To contact the BT Malicious Calls Bureau and activate a trace, call 0800 661 441 (24hrs, 7 days a week).
Hope this helps everyone...0 -
Hi, I am glad I came across this site as this whole situation is very stressful L and I would really appreciate feedback.
Initially what had happened was that my dad was suffering from depression and so I went to help at the business. Whilst there, I received a call from a woman named Marie from Commercial Power stating that we were on an emergency meter and that I had to join an electricity supplier. She Informed me that British Gas were charging me approximately 19 p/kWh whilst we are on the emergency meter. At first I was dubious about the call but Marie rang persistently and claimed that it was a necessity for us to join an electricity supplier. As I felt I had no choice, I asked Marie who were the cheapest and what was the best deal. Marie then informed me that N-Power were the cheapest as they had an offer of 13.9 p/kWh in comparison to British Gas who were offering approximately 18 p/kWh. I then informed my dad who told me that he was happy with British Gas and to ignore these calls as over the ten years, British gas had never told him about an emergency meter. However as Marie was persistent and sounded legit, I told my dad that we had to join electricity suppliers as we were on an emergency meter and that N-Power were the cheapest. My dad remained adamant that we do not agree to change the contract. However as my dad was going through depression, and I wasn’t sure what to do, and with Marie’s persistent p phone calls, I agreed to join N-Power. When I agreed to a verbal contract, my dad was not even present at the building.
When we received the final bill from British Gas, I could see that we were never on the emergency meter and we were still being charged 7.64 p/kWh. In addition N-power were now charging us practically double of what we were initially paying. Furthermore, I rang British Gas and they informed me that I had never been on the emergency meter and even if I had been, nobody outside of their company would have that information and nor would they have information of their prices.
I have tried ringing N-Power numerous times to explain my situation. Each time they come back with the answer that as I made a verbal agreement I am legally bound. However, they choose to ignore the fact that my father who is the owner and director of the business and property did not give any consent for them to change the business's electricity supply.
We have also written a complaint letter to N-Power but they are being unsympathetic and lack understanding of the situation. They do not look past the fact that the contract was only made due to the false information Marie had given us. I would really appreciate it if anyone could give me advice on where I stand and whether it would be beneficial for me to attend court and give my side of the story.
Thank- You very much0 -

nPower are correct. You were acting on behalf of the business when you formed the contract.
If you are not happy with the current contract, find out what the cancellation terms are and use them ... but you may find you are tied in for a year or more as its a business tariff.
Sorry."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
Meter Registration Service - its a sales line - heard them all before, if they ever call - hang up on them!!!!!!!!!!!:rotfl:0

If you do hang up chances are that they'll phone back to complain that you hung up on them (they've done it to me twice) and start getting aggressive again. Just leave the phone off the hook...0

Interesting how many brand new posters, or rather brand new MSE accounts, this thread has attracted "Now to trolling as a concept. .... Have you a recording or written confirmation of the this "contract"? which you "made" with Marie? If not please request it.
I believe in my limited law knowledge, that there is a "duty of care" which NPower must exercise when they as the supplier accept the instructions from This Meter Registration Service (Commercial Power).
As per my previous post please go through the list of organisations to contact, then hopefully you will be armed with enough information and feel confident to approach a solicitor. One thing which I missed off the list was the MP for Blackpool and Fleetwood.
I wish you all the best0 -
How about going to BBC Watchdog, must make a good story this. Any ideas and views on this??0

I am opening a a new business (retail shop) and had a call from CUR who told me that they are the national meter registration service and I had a legal duty to register my meter. Which I dutifully did. They then offered to find the cheapest electricity supplier and I started to be 'signed up' but refused to give my bank details over the phone and until I had a written contract. They said I had agreed a verbal contract and I must give my bank details. I said I would email them, and contacted trading standards who opened my eyes to this 'miss-selling' approach. I'll use some of the tips given earlier in the thread to prevent the contract being concluded and see what trading standards can do.0
