Has anyone else had a call from a company calling themselves the 'Meter Registration Service'?

Had a call just now from someone claiming to be from the above telling me that I had just come out of a contract with my current supplier and was now paying their emergency rates which were 30 - 40% higher than what I needed to be paying!

He was very insistent that he wasn't calling on behalf of one supplier and that the MRS work for all the suppliers! No, I wasn't falling for it either!

So I told him I was with EON to which he replied 'I could have told you that before you told me' - cheek! So I told him if I had any concerns I would get in touch with EON, thank you and goodbye. He slammed the phone down before I did!

Phoned EON to ask if they'd ever heard of this outfit and the lady at the other end said she hadn't but it was obviously a cold call and not a very good one at that!! :rotfl:

So beware - if they ring, tell them where to go!!!

They didn't celarly state their name or genuine purpose of call and gave you a lot of figures to make you feel you were paying 10 times over the odds!!! Check it out and their figures were nothing close to being competitive...so watch out!! It's too good to be true!!! and they want you to commit to 3 years!!!!!!!
  • This company is a scam, i can promise you that, there are two different companies based in blackpool doing the same thing and they both work the same way.

Commercial power sells contracts for the following providers , BES, Npower, Eon And Opus.

Everyone of the suppliers will not admit that this companies sell for them as the are encouraged to sell underhandly.

if you have registered with another company they will ring you back and more than likly advise you that they have made a mistake and offer you a "cheaper" package with some body else, but it will not work out that way.

please if you want to sort out your gas and elec, do it your self shop around and find out the best prices do not take some one elses word for it. any one want any advice please contract me about this company
  • I've had people calling all week about registering our meter... The
'Electric Registration company', 'The Electric and Gas Registration Department and 'Haven Power' are just the ones I can remember. It's driving me insane, they must have called at least 30 times.
I told the last guy we didn't have electricity, to which he asked, how I was speaking to him on he phone. I replied that I got into a massive hamster wheel when I needed to do something....

When I told him we weren't interested and that I could assure him we didn't need to register our meter, he got very rude, told me he was only doing me a favour and put the phone down on me. That's the second one who has done that. Besides the fact that it's obviously a time-wasting con, serious companies would never allow their employees to behave in such a way. I hope, anyway...

Really, this is driving me insane.
  • Although I must add, it's the 'registration' companies which have been the problem. Very rude and very persistent. The guy from Haven Power was very polite.
  • Thanks for all the threads re a so called meter registration company. I was able to read the threads whilst taking a second call from these people. We opened a new business on Monday and this morning we had no less than five calls from them. The first one was to tell me that we weren't registered and that they were sending someone to the business today as we were illegal. One of the calls was very abusive and like the other threads one was very insistent. I eventually got a male colleague to tell them to go away (or words to that effect). So to anyone who reads this they want to know your tariff and your bank details so please don't go there!!!!!
  • I have had 3 calls of this nature so far today (it's only just gone lunchtime so probably many more to be had!). I have been using a broker for a few years who have always been easy to deal with. When these cowboys started phoning me telling me that my meter was 'unregistered' I was dubious. How could it be unregistered if I've got a supplier, and I look at it every year with my broker??? With the most recent call they told me that there had been an error with my last transfer and as such my supplier was charging me out of contract rates which would be double the price. I was sceptical because I'd normally hear from either my broker or the supplier directly if there was anything wrong, so I challenged them by saying "Which supplier contacted you?". They replied with "Your supplier" so i asked them who that was, and they told me they couldn't give out that information for data protection reasons!!! Incredible! I told them that I would contact my supplier directly to sort it out, but the person told me that it would take too long to get to the right department..... ALARM BELLS! I asked for their name and a direct line so I could clarify that they worked on behalf of my current supplier and they hung up!

BE CAREFUL!!!! Don't give out any personal information, and if this company give you any prices, don't say the word 'yes' during the call!
  • We've been caught by this lot as well. They rang on the day we opened and conned us into a contract with npower. Which I am attempting to get out. Despite this the various Meter registration incarnations are still ringing us. As a hairdressers we have to answer the phone so it's abit tricky on what to do. We have registered against the cold calls but I'm now considering blowing a whistle down the phone at them!
Has anyone any ideas what we can do about this lot as it's been going on since 2008 at least by the look of these threads.
  • Does anyone have any effective methods to STOP these calls?

    *sigh*
    *fed up*
  • To everyone who has been scammed by this company.

I work for a large plc organisation with hundreds of High Street Shops. We are currently opening about fifty new shops and every time with have the phone connected, the new site is bombarded with scam calls. They mis-lead our staff and then I find we are locked in a 3-year contract with Npower at high rates.

The scammer always claims to be from "Meter Registrations" or "Commercial Registrations" There is no such entity. Ecoes are the official registration company for electric, and it is only the eclectic companies that have to register that they are your supplier.

In all cases so far, the scammer has turned out to be a company called Billscutter in Fleetwood or Blackburn.

If you have found your self in a contract and want to get out of it, please check out the Ofgems website. There is a code that has to be followed by these agents. In particular, from 2009, they have to give you a comparison estimate for their new deal and how much it would be if you stayed with the existing terms. If they have not supplied you with this they can't hold you a contract. I have also been advised that by our energy consultant that Ofgem have ruled that only written and signed contracts are valid, although I have still to find this clause. At the end of the day, what professional organisation would rely on verbal contracts? In theory they are legal and binding, but not reliable in court. What are you doing Npower? Why are you allowing this company to arrange contracts for you? This will only back fire for you.

Npower will not receive any money from our company for the disputed accounts. If you have a similar dispute but are worried about having the power disconnected, then you should know that they have to get a court order to disconnect your supply. They know these verbal contracts are dodgy and so won’t take it that far. I have some disputes going back 4 or 5 years with various utility companies (not related to Billscutter) and they just give up chasing after a while.

Npower and Billscutter will regret the day(s) they crossed me.

I hope you can benefit from my experience.

I too have been plagued by these idiots. They did the same at my last business premises.
I've never spoken to anyone so rude. They even called my husband a silly little man for telling them where to go. They hang up as soon as you ask questions or say you're not interested then phone back 20 minutes later.
Now when they phone they ask to speak to whoever deals with the supply, so I politely say "Sure, can I take your name please, and your number in case I cut you off" and they hang up.
Getting bored of it now. But can't believe any company thinks they can be downright abusive over the phone (literally swearing at me) then phone back and ask again!
Starting to get pretty bored of it now, would have thought they'd have give up by now. Think I'll just start putting them on hold and leaving it to run up their phone bill ;)
