If you know that the product was bought from John Lewis then by law you do NOT need a reciept. They can check the bar code with the tills and they can tell you if it is their product, but they dont like to do this as it takes up their time and they lose money!!!
!!!!!!!! - the barcodes are all the same. You can usually type the barcode in manually. Look at the numbers beneath the barcode (the EAN specifically) between two identical products - they are the same.

They can often (using DSGi's Eclipse POS system as an example) track down a receipt

    2. Why do I need proof ?- the clock/radio is faulty - why would I take it to a different shop from where it was bought??
Buy it on eBay as faulty, take it to JL - get a working one for a fraction of the price of even a refund and a net profit.
filtering by payment method, items on the recipt, date, store etc - but even then it's not perfect if you get a customer who "bought it last year".

Uktim, I would have to have pretty big balls to steal the thing a while back and then have the gaul to bring it back when it is faulty to ask for a replacement.
Reason why most stores don't allow returns without a receipt on unwanted products - take a product off the shelf, take it to the returns desk and say you don't want it any more and ask for a refund. Free credit vouchers or even money...

Sorry OP but your SOL and your attitude isn't immense either.

The seller is responsible for the goods. In this case John Lewis. You do not have to go to the manufacturer. If you bought with John Lewis vouchers just insist on your rights. If they still refuse, ask to be excused, take out your mobile and call trading standards consumer direct. This action will produce amazing results.

to exercise your rights you need proof of purchase which the OP doesn't have! I guarentee trading standards will say the exact same thing

If John Lewis's systems are anything like the systems I'd worked with you would need to know the exact time and date of the purchase to trace a receipt, but even then it relies on them having to take your word for it and it can get very tricky if a number of them were sold on the same day. If they pick a transaction they think is right and it turns out to be wrong it's not fair on the person who's transaction it was if they later come back with a fault!
