Cheshire County Council give up to £25 cashback when you spend over £50 on real nappies. Alternatively you get 1 month's free trial of a nappy laundry service. The following sites offer local information on real nappies: https://www.lizziesrealnappies.co.uk or https://www.cottontails.co.uk.

I've used real nappies for over 2 years now and think they're truly splendid!

I find that nappies are cheaper in Costco and then I use the vouchers from pampers, huggies etc etc in Tesco even though I have not bought any nappies!

I used flat terrys for my first two, and they had a second life as hand towels - they are a bit threadbare now though after 9 years.

However, unexpectedly we had number 3, now 8 months old. I found the choice of reusables overwhelming - I can see why some people don't bother because it all seems quite confusing.

However I now use a combination of Kissaluvs (gorgeous fleecy nappies), Snugglenaps (shaped terry in white, blue or pink), and Growing Greens made of cotton and hemp. The least absorbant are the Kissaluvs - they probably wouldn't last through the night. The other two both last all night and are excellent.

Wraps - I tried the Totsbots fleece wraps, but I wouldn't use them again, they do tend to "wick". I use Nature Babies and Mother Nature which are adjustable and are both excellent.

I got mine from Kittykins - they were far better than the Nappy Lady, who didn't even bother replying to a query I had. Kittykins despatch the nappies on the day you order, or at the latest the next day. Very quick service.

I know you didn't actually ask for any advice, but thought this might be helpful in making your choice. Also you don't need to soak nappies before washing - stick them in a dry bucket, and when you wash them they will come out completely clean - plus I only wash at 60C and they are stain-free!
    Hope all this helps!

Sorry I left my brain on the bus! Mother Nature SHOULD have read Modern Baby!

Another point I found with Kissaluvs - they take FOREVER to dry, even if you use a tumble drier.

Maybe I'm just a bit tight with money, but I use the disposable nappy liners, wash and iron them and use them again. They do get a bit weaker each time, but you can get about 3 uses out of them, which I find handy as the nearest outlet for reusable nappy things is about 45 minutes drive away.

I have to say I love my washable nappies and wouldn't use anything else (having also used disposables when I absolutely have to).

gah! today my baby has outgrown his kushies all in ones and is in the disposables (previously only used overnight for his longest sleep) because i don't have any nappies in the larger size. i was told kushies will last until he's around a year old (22lbs)! he's only ten weeks old, weighs under 17lb. he's in huggies size 3. i'm glad i bought my nappies second hand from ebay but even so i have spent more on them than it would have cost to use disposables, not even counting the cost of washing, etc.

can somebody please recommend a nappy for my baby? he has a fat belly and fat thighs, he's not obese, he's about the size of a 6 month old but he is on the chubby side. he prefers a nappy to be elasticated, he wasn't too keen on the kushies. i don't want to buy size 2 kushies but there's nowhere around here to look at nappies. does anyone else have a chubby baby and can recommend a nappy (either all in one or a nappy and wrap) to suit?

  • There is no doubt that using real nappies will save you money over the nappy using stage of your child and even more so if they are used on more than one child.

The initial outlay for cloth nappies can be high, depending on which flavour you opt for, but this market is becoming mroe competitive so shop around.

TreeHugger Mums - https://www.treehuggermums.co.uk have a blanket 10% off across the entire shop at present so may be worth a look.

Boo hiss. bad news for you Jellyhead. It also must be frustrating for you that you can't visit a nappy agent if there's no one around. Martin's article mentioned a try before you buy by post. Could you make use of that perhaps?

On the plus side, I guess you can resell your kushies on ebay for roughly what you paid for them.

I love my motherease birth to potty and use natures babys wraps. Adjustable poppers pull them tight enough for my skinny lad, but there's loads of growing room on them so maybe would work for your littl'un?

I have never heard anyone say anything bad about terries (except for the bulkiness of them), so maybe give them a try?

Other than that, I can be of no more help sizewise as my 14 month old boy is still wearing 3-6 month clothes...

    Hi Jellyhead

I sympathise, I've got a big boy too. 14lbs at 6.5 weeks. He's just over 8 weeks now. He's got fat thighs and a big belly too, and kushies didn't work for us.

I've just bought a load of Fuzzi Buns. They seem to fit much better. I've also got a wonderoo coming, which is the same as a Fuzzi Bunz but one size for birth to potty.

thanks a lot :-) roo was over 14lbs at his 6 week check too - ooops! every time he gets weighed he jumps a band on the chart, he started off on the 50th centile. i've no idea why he grows so much, he's 10 weeks, he doesn't have any food and he has less milk than the other babies i know. he also has reflux so he vomits and possets some back up, he's just a very large boy lol!

i found out that there's a coffee morning at a church in town in 5 weeks time run by the NCT, it's a bring and buy cake sale and there will be a nappy demonstration, sounds promising :-)
