  • So any ideas on my sub-standard house? It's not like we choose where we want to live and what sort of house we get  When/If we get moved out, we will move into a house in the same area and it will have a new kitchen and bathroom. The house we are in currently will be done up and then someone else will move in.

Hi. We've been in our quarter now for 3.5yrs. Just wondering how often carpets should be replaced. My clever dh dropped the iron a few wks ago and burned a hole in our lounge carpet. Is it worth seeing whether or not it's due to be replaced? Is that quite unlikely? What is your advice? Thanks in advance.

The carpets are meant to be replaced every 10 yrs. I would ring your HIC and ask when they are due :)

Quick question about march outs - we've been in our MQ for 11 years now (yes we've been very lucky to stay put whilst child in education) we've never had a redec or new carpets etc and the house has been regraded to "substandard" - tbh I'm cross because we've gone from grade 2 to grade 4 but they won't back date - clearly the house has been substandard for years - but thats another topic - anyway, we will be due to move within the next 12 months how does the regrading affect march out? Does that mean we don't have to worry about the carpets (which were due to be replaced when we moved in but we chose not to) what about paintwork etc?
    Win's so far: Cadburys Mini Eggs £1.09 Pentel Goody Bag £10 , M&S Luxury Hamper £45, 10,000 Tesco clubcard points (£100) :j

just before you close the door for the last time, turn around and throw a match in.......................lol.

Seriously though you need to speak to DE (or whatever they are called this week). I say this because in Coningsby a few years ago, they were selling off/knocking down houses and even though the houses were getting knocked down, DE still did march outs and expected the properties back at march out standard!!

On the flip side, you may have a DE rep who has common sense and as the property is now a grade 4, may say what standard is required (if any!) and you may have wasted your time getting it up to a march out standard.

Yes, you should be so lucky. I think you will still have to wash down the paintwork, because it needs to be clean before they can paint it (all those hairs and yuck stuck in my chipped and disgusting skirting boards notwithstanding). You might get away with carpets, but if you have a pet, I suspect you will still have to have them professionally cleaned.

I am very excited, however, because having been whingeing to DE/MHS since August (when we moved into this house), they came last week and fitted a new aerial to the roof, and I can now watch ALL the freeview channels (not just BBC1 and 2). It's great, because I haven't even seen the repeats! They also came last week and replaced my carpets for no apparent reason. I didn't think they needed done, but I didn't like to say no!

Help I am having a nighmare with MODern housing and contractors

    - In october 2008 we raised a complaint as the windows in the sitting room have come loose, move and the curtians are moving due to the drafts.
I took a day off work they sent someone who said it would be a 2 person job.

We never heard another thing so we called again, another day off work same situation only 1 person sent, although they have said that they would come back on another day, we have seen their boss on 3 occasions and each time he promises to send someone around no one has come. We have reraised the job but on date set as yet.

    - In addition we now have squirrels nesting in the roof and eating through the woodwork which is very noisy at night, they have started eating the wiring. So far we have had an electrican, someone to replace the watertanks, but they won't repair the holes in the roof or trim the trees touching the buliding.

I am at my witts end, I work long hours 7am-7pm I don't know anyone around here and my husband is away on and off. What should I do?

re the windows and failed appointments, call MHS and lodge an official complaint (keep all logs of calls/reference numbers/the person you speak to/appointment dates).

Are you with the army? If you get nowhere, consider calling AFF (army families federation), they helped us out last year over a multitude of MHS mess ups. As soon as AFF became involved MHS suddenly started to fix the faults. If aff don't get to hear from people they can't flag up that there's a problem.

When my husband complained about contractors not turning up we were sent some vouchers (for the high street) to make up for the hassle. The problem is still not sorted out though!

It is stated in the MHS handbook, that if they miss an appointment you are entitled to compensation in the form of vouchers. However, if it's due to extreme circumstances then they won't pay out.

They are not missed appointments and they have confimed that they will not do anything because somone has turned even if it is not the correct amount of people for the job.
