Ebay - Big Brother is watching YOU

Just logged in to my Ebay account and got a message from them saying that they are going to start telephoning people if they use a different computer to list on, from the one they normally use.

So, would you please make sure your contact tel.no. is correct

This is supposedly to stop people hijacking accounts I think.

I don't think I am about to put my phone number up on my Ebay account for every Tom !!!!!! and Harry to get hold of!

Anyway I couldn't find whereabouts one is listed anyway

No doubt I will be closed down if I pop to the library and do some listing whilst hubby is using the machine at home then!!!!!

That's a pity. A valid phone number is an ebay account requirement.

Well I can't find a telephone number listed anywhere on my account

In my Personal info section there is a Mobile Phone number space for SMS alerts, but as I don't want these it is blank

So, if anyone can point me in the right diection I can see if I already have one on file!!

use this link to edit your registration details - http://cgi4.ebay.co.uk/ws1/eBayISAPI.dll?ChangeRegistrationShow&guest=1

If you are likely to be using a computer away from your home, then it would make sense to add a mobile number to take the verification call.

If you are very savvy, you could set up a premium rate call forwarder, and charge eBay up to £1.50 a minute to call you! - http://www.4telgroup.com/ngn/0870%20national%20rate.htm

With regards leaving your number on eBay, it is for their use, not buyers - but registered business sellers have to have this information displayed, and any bidders on your items can request the details anyway. If you do not have a valid phone number on your eBay account, it could be deemed a breach of the user agreement for false contact details. I guess it is highly unlikely that anyone with access to an ebay selling account will not have a phone - landline or mobile.

This subject first came up in march when the announcement was made on eBay, it's only now that the pop-up has come to remind people about it.

    Thanks stevew8975

I did indeed have a number registered but it was a very old mobile on't

To save any mega hassels I have popped my current mobile number on file.

I dont' earn much from Ebay but it all helps pay for my 2 girls school trips and scout camps!! Paris, Provence and Summer Scout Camp all adds up to quite a bit.

According to an eBay employee posting on the PS Board today...

    1. eBay will NOT call you arbitrarily. When you are in the listing flow, you will initiate the phone call through an automated process to one of your registered phone numbers including mobile phones. If you do not have access to any of those, you can put in a whole new number provided you answer your secret question.

    2. This initiative will work with multiple computers. You will simply have to go through Identity Confirmation from the computers you LIST from.

    3. A Live Chat link will be available on the same page where we ask sellers to confirm their identity.

    4. This is not IP based tracking, nor does it install spyware on your PC. It works using cookies and flash objects.

    5. We treat your phone number in accordance with our Privacy Policy as we do with all details about your account. Policy details are here: http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/privacy-policy.html

Members get to choose which number is used as part of the normal flow. They are presented with a list of numbers to choose from and then specify a time to be called.

They can choose to enter a new number to get the call on but that requires you to answer the secret question on the account, so a little extra required here.

Does anyone know how to amend their phone number? My old number shows up underneath my address but when i click on address it doesnt show it. Have gone through all the edits but cant find it. This is going to be a problem.
