I'm not sure what the MSE rules are about quoting links things so I won't post it directly, but will tell you how I did it.
I used the second link provided in the message from SteveW in post #6 on this threadand then looked at the options. I went for the 0871 rather than the 0870 because there are, it seems, issues with 0870 and Ofcom.
I decided on the standard option which is free (rather than the memorable number option which costs you £9.99 set up fee). I phoned them up on the 0800 (free) number they provide on their website. It was all done and dusted and set up within 20 minutes. No credit card details given - just name and address and email address and the number you want it to resolve to.
I was asked if I'm a business customer. I am - I have a ltd company (but I'm not an ebay business user)- but I think you may be able to get away with saying you're a sole trader or unincorporated company.
The 0871 number costs the dialler 10p per minute. I get 4p per minute of that call (I'm happy for the provider to get the other cut - 4p per minute is better than 0p per minute)
And yes, the 0871 number when dialled does make my home landline phone number ring ring because that's where I've asked it to be directed to. But, I have an answerphone and caller id so can screen out if I wish. But, if I give it to all those marketing companies, even if the answerphone kicks in, I'll be earning.
Apparently, they send you monthly statistics. They say that once you reach £10.00, you send them an invoice and they send you a cheque. If you don't reach £10.00 in one month, then it's rolled over to the next. This bit I haven't proven yet (obviously!). But what is proven is that if I dial the 0871 number, my home phone rings.I am the leading lady in the movie of my life

I used to work in a retail outlet (OK a shop to you and me) and if I was taking a payment over the phone would always ask what the card type was. I was not required to, but when you entered the full card number into the machine it displayed the card type (VISA/MasterCard/Switch etc).
If the person on the other end can't tell you what type of card it is, the chances are they don't have the card in front of them and it could be fraudulent.
I just found it another little security check for peace of mind. Not to be relied upon but another piece of the jigsaw perhaps.0
