B rating this week Gas and Electric both down on last week, am very happy.
  • you can use certain low energy bulbs with dimmers. i know megaman do them although i dont know how good they are.

There are a number of different options for dimmers etc, and being me I have tried most of them! PM/email me if you want opinions on them.

Best option with the bulbs is to a. remember that the ones that are now so cheap used to cost nearly a tenner, b. use the cheap/free ones for e.g. outside lights (I find I frequently leave these on for hours by mistake!), hallways & landings, kids rooms where they leave the lights on all the time... c. get the spiral ones (slightly more expensive, wait for e.g. Homebase 10% off day) for lights in rooms where the quality of light is more important (these are generally warm start). In places where lights are switched off when not in use (so your bedroom, not kids rooms!), don't worry so much - by the time the incandescent bulbs have gone, energy saving technology wil have moved on. I move things round every time a lightbulb goes!

There don't really seem to be satisfactory alternatives to halogens/reflector spotlights yet, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time before the LED technology reduces in price!
  • Today I am having my heating system surveyed by council, really hoping htey will pass me for a new system. Have the original radiators and a back boiler, also an old 70's fire. This property has already been turned down for the new kitchen and bathroom everyone else is having as part of the decency homes scheme.

Back to rating D. Somehow I cant see me ever making it to C.
How has my energy spend been calculated?

Does anyone have any idea as the most efficient type of "portable" heater?

My DH was admitted to hospital on Thursday evening, due to breathing problems linked to his cancer. While being booked in he mentioned that he's felt really cold for the last month or so...... so I felt cruel I'd been trying to keep the heating as low as I could, but he's said nothing to me at all. I have been running it for longer than normal, but at a slightly lower temp -- figuring this wouldn't use much more gas than our normal heating settings, but wouldn't give the extreme fluctuations I thought would cause the most problems.

He's probably coming home today/tomorrow (actually threatening to discharge himself tomorrow), so I was "playing" with the heating yesterday -- only to discover I couldn't really improve the downstairs temperature without turning upstairs into an oven  It also means the temperature right through the house is actually too high for me, and I start getting a very, very dry throat :(

So I was wondering about getting a heater he could use in whichever room he's in to boost the temperature just in there  Got a leaflet from Mr L this morning, and I see they have ceramic heaters (Oscillating Fan Heater, 2 settings at 900W and 1800W) for £12.99 coming in on 20th, and also a 'Panel Heater' for £49.99 the same day (which says it has a frost protection function, so I assume it could be left on but turned down overnight, but in terms of power just says '3 settings' and 'max 1500W').

Just entered today's readings into i-measure

electricity is up on last week (by 0.6kWh/day), but gas is down (by 6.6kWh/day). I'm putting the gas reduction down to the fact DH has been in hospital since Thursday evening, so other than yesterday I've not had the heating on as much ;) That said, it's on now and I was watching the dial whizz round while I was taking the reading

    Last week you spent:
    • £5.04 on gas (s/sheet figure = £5.87)
    • £9.12 on electricity (s/sheet figure = £8.41)
Total you have spent on energy since starting imeasure (7 weeks ago):
    • £20.55 on gas (s/sheet figure = £25.45)
    • £65.04 on electricity (s/sheet figure = £59.72)
    Carbon emissions Kg CO2
    ........................Last week......Last Month
    Per Person...........23 (41)...........21 (36)
    Per Household......69 (110)..........63 (94)

    Gas use as kWh

    ........................Last week......Last Month
    Per Person...........48 (133).........36 (109)
    Per Household.....144 (347).........108 (281)

    Electricity use as kWh

    ........................Last week......Last Month
    Per Person...........25 (27)..........26 (25)
    Per Household......76 (76)..........77 (70)

We're still a 'B' rating against all gas & electricty houses, and show as 49/60 in the carbon club

I am! Trying that is! :D Got 5 washloads on the line on Sunday, nice & windy and only needed a few mins in the TD to finish off.

Tomorrow's looking good so I think that'll be a bedding day.

Am forced to use the TD sometimes when we run out of school uniforms.:o

Still CH hasn't gone back on since that nasty shock of using 10x more kwh in just a day!

  • cw19 I googled for an oil heater in argos, when we had our ch leak and they have a very good choice. The best type is one with a thermostat and I wouldn`t go for a fan heater because of the noise and dust being blown about re the breathing problems. I actually settled for the dimplo cadiz eco heater and it was/is fantastic. It was about £99 but there are much cheaper heaters there

this one looks a very good buy at £25
