My Energy use Diary

Well just did my weekly read and weird results.
My gas use is down from last week to 592 kwh (from 670).
However my electric use has gone up from 69 kwh to 74. It had already gone up about 6 kwh which I presumed allowed for the extra lighting etc. I've not had the tumble dryer on although all of my washes have been at 40 deg since this is my only fast wash cycle...maybe that's it? i guess I did also do most of my weekly ironing yesterday as well, that might have contributed....will be interesting to see if it's down a bit next week.
Good luck in the new place NYK...0 -

My standard 30deg wash uses a third of a unit but the quick 40deg wash uses half a unit. I do 6-8 'normal' loads a week.
7 x 1/3 = 2.3kwh
7 x 1/5 = 3.5kwh0 -
You seem the people to ask...I went into a supermarket and asked a staff member if you could mix normal bulbs with energy saving on one light fitting. She said she had been told by anm electrician no. I have two fittings which each use 3 bulbs - small ones so it is going to cost. (ie not the ones that have been 5 for 50p recently)
She ALSO said that you cannot use energy saving bulbs in lights where the switch is a dimmer. as I have a dimmer in my lounge (5 bulbs) 1 x 3 and 2 wall lights one bulb each I would like this confirmed.
Also I have a dimmer in my bedroom so I can't use one in there.
Is this, in fact, correct?
There are a number of different options for dimmers etc, and being me I have tried most of them! PM/email me if you want opinions on them.
Best option with the bulbs is to a. remember that the ones that are now so cheap used to cost nearly a tenner, b. use the cheap/free ones for e.g. outside lights (I find I frequently leave these on for hours by mistake!), hallways & landings, kids rooms where they leave the lights on all the time... c. get the spiral ones (slightly more expensive, wait for e.g. Homebase 10% off day) for lights in rooms where the quality of light is more important (these are generally warm start). In places where lights are switched off when not in use (so your bedroom, not kids rooms!), don't worry so much - by the time the incandescent bulbs have gone, energy saving technology wil have moved on. I move things round every time a lightbulb goes!
There don't really seem to be satisfactory alternatives to halogens/reflector spotlights yet, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time before the LED technology reduces in price!0 -
Good luck Nyk, in your moneysaving, energy saving new home.

I've just switched my npower tariff to the latest online deal so my bills should go down even further now.
For those of you with npower, they recently (last week I think) bought out a new internet tariff - sign online 14 - and it's cheaper than any of the old deals. It may be worth going to a couple of comparison sites to check if you're getting the best deal or not.
Anyway, it will be that time of week again tomorrow.. so good luck y'all! :beer:This space is available to rent...0 -

my results are on i measure and gas use has gone down this week. Nice to see the correlation between gas and weather. I see the temperature this week is set to be reasonable again. Only about 14 weeks to the promise of spring :T

Hi guys, got the keys to new place yesterday, so went over right away to do the meter reading and get started with the cleaning & moving. There are 3 storage heaters on low settings, but the house was warm enough; I didn't need to kindle a fire. Tonight, before leaving, I took another reading to see what we had used over the 2 days. To my delight, we had used only 11 daytime units and 14 nightime units! It's amazing the difference, as that was including 2 tanks of hot water! Ican't wait to get moved in fully and make the most of moneysaving in a smaller house
