    Hi FMN
I thought I was employable too, unfortunately I couldn't get the agencies to put me forward for any of the jobs I could do, lol.
    Good Luck

Thank you lucielle, Y-L and Binnie. I guess pride does come into it. I don't really want to do a job I'm overqualified for (eughh! - I don't like the way that makes me sound!), but at the same time I have to realise that I may not find my ideal job first time around, especially as I haven't worked for so long. We urgently need the money. I should take a leaf from your book Binnie, and take something, anything so I can get out there and start earning.

FMN, I am pleased to read that some of your creditors are playing ball.

I too haven't worked in paid employment for some time, I'm a Book-keeper, and decided some months ago that I would like to return to work part-time, we haven't got any debt at this time apart from the mortgage but with the increases in fuel and food etc, I thought I would like to maintain our current but simple lifestyle and return to work. I have applied for over 10 jobs and have recieved only 3 replies, two saying sorry you were not shortlisted, and I thought blow this I going to apply for anything to get on the ladder, so I applied to the council to be a Mid Day assistant at one of the local schools, and I have today received notification that I am their preferred candidate, the interview was horrid. A panel of 3 interviewing for a "Dinner lady", It was the most daunting interview I have ever had, but I have the job and it starts in September and only term time and pays £200 per month. I will be looking for something else after Christmas but every little helps.

I am not suggesting for one moment that you have to apply for an unqualified job, but it is always easier to get a job once you are in a job, my advice to you, is take anything just now and once you have been in a job for a year or so, apply for something else, employers like to have someone who has worked recently, and I am ashamed to tell anyone else that I have the "Dinner Lady" job, as my friends know I am a qualified Book-keeper, but I had to do something, I am not wanting to go back down the debt route, it almost ruined my marriage and my family life, and I will do anything to prevent that from happening again.

I wish you the best in your job search.

  • Hi Merlot, I know completely what you're saying and thank you for telling me about your job. I know I need to get anything at this point. I can't afford the luxury of pride!

Take a deep breath and relax, you have done the hard bit now in fessing up to your situation and you'll be amazed how much more in control you feel. Knowing you are in debt but not sure of how much is like being on a runaway train. You'll get loads of really good advice on here and there is always a solution to everything.

    Good luck

  • Hi FMN
Apart from the job situation, how are you doing keeping that family of yours entertained for the school break so far?? I have checked and our local pool is doing free swim every day throughout the hols for all under 16's, so we will be spending a lot of time there. I have taken both children to the library today and DD has a princess DVD for a week and DS has the latest book from his favourite author, so that are both chuffed.

We also did a mystery shop today which required a min spend of £5 at Hawkins Bazaar so they both got a treat there as well. I will be paid £10 for that, so only £5 in the bank. If I had been on my own I would have taken the goods back, but it is impossible trying to explain that to a five year old.

I hope you are finding no/low spend activities too, if you have any good ones I would be keen to hear them?

On the job front, have a look at your local council websites the local authority I work for always have a range of jobs and once in you can then focus on getting into the communications/marketing dept.

    Best wishes
    xx

  • Hi Ruby, up to now we've just been seeing the children's friends. Today has been at home and I've been doing debt management stuff while the play in the garden/watch films. Planning to go to the library later or tomorrow. I will find out about the council activities too, but at the moment I'm in credit debt territory! xx

Would anyone be able to advise me on setting up pro-rata payments myself, versus handing the whole thing over for a DMP? I think we have about £130/month for debt repayment until I'm working/get tax credits restored and I've worked out how much we could pay pro-rata to each creditor. Shall I go ahead and offer these amounts, based on our situation now, or wait till things improve?

    Thanks for any advice.

When I had a DMP with CCCS they worked out for each creditor, how much as a percentage their debt was of the whole total amount of debt. They then applied that percentage to my total available monthly payment. I probably haven't explained that very well so an example is
    Total debt £10,000

    made up of creditors
    creditor 1 £4,000
    creditor 2 £6,000

creditor 1 is 40% of total debt, creditor 2 is 60%

If i can pay back £100 per month to ALL my creditors, then creditor 1 is entitled to 40% of £100 per month ( £40) and creditor is entitled to 60% (£60)

Make sure you've left youself enough money too - prices rise and appliances break down even when doing a DMP. Can i ask why you are thinking of doing this yourself rather than through one of the charities? Just curious, although the charities may be able to get interest stopped quicker.
