I've just got one. An Andrew James I think the make is. Took it caravaning with us over the weekend, and cooked a couple of meals is it. Still a bit of a trial and error at guessing when cooking is done, and I over cooked a little, but with practice I should get there :-) I had a friend round last week, and she saw a recipe book I had on the side and told me she cooked on nothing else while in France and loved them :-) So I shall be picking her brains lol.

We're thinking of getting a halogen oven to replace a hardly-used microwave, so wondered...
Anyone used them for cooking rice (the main use of our microwave these days)?
Also, can you successfully toast bread in one, or is the grill more suitable for chops, etc ?
Thanks0 -

It is an Oven. You cook in it what you would cook in an ordinary oven.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
I did cheese on toast and it toasted fine, but the underneath wasn';t that crispy. I did a pie today, homemade with puff topping, that took about 10 mins at 220, next time i'd do it longer at lower. The veg was broccoli that I wrapped in foil with some water but that was still a tad hard after 20 mins. Any veg tips? This year I'm getting organised once and for all, and going to buy a house with my wonderful other half. And that' s final!

I bought one of these and it arrived a couple of days ago. Never having had a halogen oven before I have to say that I have been impressed with my first (basic) attempts at cooking in it....homemade Burgers, Roasties, Chips and Chicken Drumsticks and Whole Chicken.
So far however there are a few things that may cause problems in the future:
1. You get no instructions with it whatsoever so everything is very much trial and errror.
2. It seems to be impossible to get a replacement bulb for this oven (if anyone knows different i would be grateful to find out where). OK you have years warranty but at £109 I dont want to be replacing it every 13 months.
3. The tumbler...excellent for chips etc and for turning your roasts but the fact the the turntable unit comes up through the glass bowl you are as far as I can see limited to the one rack that you get with it, which greatly reduces the amount of things you can cook at any one time.0 -
Yikes - new generation! I'm still overawed by my (original) halogen oven being fan-assisted, having cooked with an ancient creaky bucket of a gas oven for the past 12 years!
Paddywack, I'm assuming the new generation bulbs are different to the original ones then? I bought the Andrew James oven because it had a spare bulb with it, and new ones are easy to order from them if needed. I can't even find a google on the new generation oven, let alone its bulb.I believe in the freedom of spinach and the right to arm bears.

I'm still learning with mine too - I haven't tried doing veg in it though, I still do veg either in the microwave or on the hob.I believe in the freedom of spinach and the right to arm bears.

I get brilliant results when I put the oven on whilst preparing the chesse on toast and putting it in a hot oven directly on the higher rack, one of the few times when I need to pre-heat. Also find for a full pie I blind-bake the bottom pastry first making sure I !!!!! it with a fork, tip I picked up here"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety". - Benjamin Franklin0 -
I love toasted cheese in the halogen..I use the high rack, place bread on and toast one side whilst slicing the cheese, then turn bread and add cheese to untoasted side,so quick and easy....its the only way we do it in our house now.
PS.Paddywack41 I forgot to add,did you get your new oven from Ideal World?..my original £50 odds one came from them,it stopped working after 18months,I Emailed ideal world and asked if it was covered by the European 2yr guarantee, they said it was, collected it free of charge, couldnt repair it ,so they refunded me my money in total(well apart from original delivery charge),I was very impressed with Ideal World afetr that.Slimming World..Wk1,..STS,..Wk2,..-2LB,..Wk3,..-3.5lb,..Wk4,..-2.5,..Wk5,..-1/2lb,Wk6,..STS,..Wk7,..-1lb.
