Table-top halogen ovens

I tend to only use my Halogen oven for roast chicken, but it knocks off a third of the time it takes in the main oven and I can add veg and potatoes to roast, so a great money saver. I'm a little put off by all the problems people have encountered with them and the short life some of them seem to have.
I think that I need to be a bit more experimental with mine. Any suggestions?0 -

I've had many. In the past I've bought a new one off Ebay, another from a car boot sale and finally one from JML. I love the way the food tastes cooked in them. The only problem I've found is that the heating element does not last! The last one I bought from JML and it failed after 4 months and had to be replaced. I am keeping my fingers crossed that this one will last! On saying that the fan element in my main cooker went quite quickly too.
I now do not use my cooker, just the halogen oven. It gets used every day.
It does take up some work space, but the JML one is easy to clean and the food tastes great, IMHO.
sorry to jump in on thisr thread kittykat500 I have a jml and the heating eliment has gone fan and everything else works where did/do you get the heating elements???? Jacket potatoes are out of this worldThe solving of a problem lies in finding the solvers.0 -

I've been tempted to buy a small mini oven as it's such a waste of energy when you're heating up a little food. Can anyone recommend a mini oven with grill?
We have the Daulit mini oven with grill and it`s fab heats up in 5 mins we have been really pleased with it!0 -

After reading through the thread about halogen ovens I finally took the plunge and bought one. I've tried a couple of things but as everyone says the instructions that come with them are rubbish.
Yesterday I was doing a roast but chickened out of using the halogen oven. I was going to roast the meat first and then do the roast potatoes after the meat was cooked. I wasn't sure what to cook the potatoes in? I know I could cook the meat on the wire rack but what sort of dish do you cook the potatoes in? I have bought a round baking tray that fits in the oven which I can use to put things like chips on but it wouldn't be deep enough for roast potatoes.0 -
Hi Rosie
I'll leave this until you get a few responses, then I'll merge it with the halogen oven thread
Sorry, i don't have experience of it myself:)
thanks

I always put my potatoes in with the meat for the last 36 minutes having basted them with a combination of melted butter and vegetable oil beforehand. I just stand them on the same rack as the meat.0

I've read this thread and noticed that quite a few of you use your halogen oven to make bread. How? I've tried twice now and have treated it like a normal oven with a 20 degree temp reduction but still haven't had any success. I've been using a metal loaf tin and both times have taken the bread out of the tin after 10 mins and turned it upside down. The top 3/4s of the loaf is cooked normally but I just can't seem to get the bottom cooked properly.
Is everyone else using a metal tin or a silicone tin? I've made cupcakes in the HO and had more success with silicone cases than with paper cases. Should I try without a tin? Maybe put foil over the top of the bread once it's browned? Please help because the main reason I bought it was to cook my bread in it.
Another thing I've read on here is that lots of you make cheese on toast in it. Do you brown one side of the bread first because when I tried it I just put in a slice of bread topped with cheese on the high rack and the bread wasn't toasted underneath.
