  • Had home insurance for 5 years, but never paid extra for accidental cover as I have always had the opinion in the very unlikely event I break the TV it is my fault and I shall buy a new one.

However my OH has raised a good question, a neighbour left a pan on when they went out and caused significant smoke damage to their house, in that scenario, or for example if we went to work and my OH mistakenly left the power on her GHD's and the house burnt down, would we be covered as we don't have accidental b/c cover?

I have tried to research this but their is very little info, Insurance professionals opinions please...

More than likely a fire claim.

Just had a renewal quote from Home Protect which is listed on this site as a company who will help those with hard to insure property.

Gone from £300 to £4000 pa!

They have updated their flood risk data and according to this data my house is now a flood risk. The stone built cottage has been here since 1815 and has never been flooded, some of the village has had flooding many years ago but never this area.

Just thought that this company should not be included as a go to for difficult insurance now. The rise in the premium plus the £25,000 excess makes it uninsurable with them, despite their platitudes that they are still committed to offering cover.

Had a search for anyone else with this problem but soooooo many threads which weren't related so posting here.

Using GoCompae I found Esure at £185, they also added in free extras like accidental cover.
Home Protect were right at the bottom with £1,300 quote which is a lot less than the renewal even after speaking to them on the phone! That sounds like a company wanting to rebalance its risks.
  • Reinsured my 3 bed house last month.

I fell into the complacency trap a few years ago, insured with my bank and didn't shop around for a couple of years. Went from £15 a month to £45! Went with Swinton last year, £15 a month with £30 cash back. This year Legal & General, £127 for the year with £78 cash back from squidco!

I've got the renewal in the post this morning from LV. i only have building cover, nothing for contents and it's £85.46.
I think it was somewhere around £95 last year.

Just had my renewal from Home Protect with a stupid flood risk increase in premium, even though the Environment Agency flood maps show no risk of flooding from a brook 150 metres away.

As a newbie I can't link to my thread but if you search for "revised flood risk" you should find it.
