I have one long term lodger and usually one, sometimes two foreign postgraduate students. I have been insured through Endsleigh with Axa or Zurich for a number of years, but are there any other insurers out there who are good with this type of buildings and contents insurance?

My contents were £255 last year; I've never made a claim.

I am sure many moneysavers are in the same situation as me - any good tips?
  • I have had lots of quotes recently as I need to renew our policy. As much as price, I am interested to know how good the insurers will be to deal with if I have to make a claim. Does anyone have a recommendation on that basis - I understand that you get what you pay for but some of the cheaper companies must be good to deal with.

Which? recommends some insurers based on different criteria including their claim handling.

The top of the chart is probably the most expensive, but there are some cheaper companies in the recommended category as well as others way down the list best avoided:

Which's testing or scoring must be flawed, I work for one of the insurers on that list and we also underwrite two of the other companies on the list with the exact same policy wording and cover limits and yet the scoring varies by as much as 10% for the policy score.

As a pensioner on a tight budget, I was dismayed when the renewal for our House Insurance had increased with Saga. I contacted Age UK who quoted £100 per year less for equivalent cover. I advise other pensioners to try them.

Don't necessarily assume that either will be cheaper for older people though. I have been checking premiums for my mum aged over 70 and Privilage comes out cheapest with Saga costing 15% more and Age UK a hefty 40% more expensive.

The big insurance rip off that gets me is effectively 'double cover', I've got a couple of watches which have to be named articles on the policy because of the value if I want to wear them outside the home. But I have to insure them both on the assumption that they are both out of the house at the same time, there is no other way for most insurers to insure them, they can't assume you 'rotate' between them so I am effectively paying double cover as I am paying for 2 watches to be outside the home when one is on my wrist and the other is in the safe at home. To me that's an insurance rip off.

Well my home renewal came back from LV this year about 10% up so I did a comparison but found that LV were still the cheapest around. The only thing is that it was actually about 2% cheaper than my premium from last year therefore I decided to not renew and let the policy expire, at which point I took out a new policy with LV at the cheaper premium plus a possible 23 quid cashback from topcashback.
Can't see anything wrong with that.

I'm really sorry if this has been asked before, but there's simply so much information on here its a nightmare trawling through it.
My buildings/contents is up for renewal - I can get a good deal on the comparison sites, but my daughters iPad was stolen from uni earlier this year with no forced entry. As such, we didn't pursue a claim, however our present insurer (LV) are aware of it. Does this need to go down as a notifiable claim, as it sticks nearly 30% on the price? I'm wary of "uberrimae fidei" (there's college law study for you...)
If its not recognised as a claim, I won't mention it, but I should hate to give an insurer wriggle room.

Just did a comparison quote and found a good deal. But I wanted cashback,so did the same quote via a cashback site, only for it to come out £40 more, virtually wiping out the cash back!

Is that normal? Seems like a bit of a rip off?
