  • Hi. my girlfriend who is living with me works full time but she has just set up as a business from home as well. she is doing cakes from home. just basically baking them at home and then delivers them, no one comes to the house. ive just put an oven and a fridge in the spare room for her.

    so my question is...

what do i put on my home insurance when it ask me.
'Is the property ever used for business use?'

    the options are..

    clerical business use only
no business use or professional use
    other business use
regular business visitors to the property

    also says;
'Business use Answer 'yes' if you have any business-related visitors to the property, if you run a business from home or if you have paying guests staying at the property.

What if I work from home sometimes? If you do occasional admin/clerical work from home for your employer, answer No business or professional use.'

    thank you in advance!!
  • Home insurance and dog cover?
Two weeks ago our dog (a staffie) somehow jumped our front gate and had a fight with/ attacked a dog (a mini yorkie) passing the house. I won't say he attacked as he had a bite to his ear and as you can imagine from the difference in breeds the other dog came off worse. The other dog was being walked, off lead, by 2 children aged between about 10 & 14, they also had 2 other small dogs which were on lead. We are responsible owners and have owned staffies for the past 28 years, we currently have 2 and they are well trained and socialised going to 4 classes a week. One thing that to me doesn't add up is that when my mum called him he came in without hesitation and it is well known and publicised in the press that if a staffy attacks they don't let go, he came away immediately. Anyway the children are the only ones who saw so we will never know. Anyway mum and brother wrapped the yorkie in a towel and took straight to vets, leaving details of which one with neighbours. Dog passed over to vets and owners told by mum we would pay bill. Police cane the next day to check they weren't out of control digs and we weren't (in his words) irresponsible chavs using them as status symbols. We gave details of the regular training we undertake and he said he was happy he could reassure owners that we are responsible and told us to continue training - warned they were currently being quoted £2,500 - 5000! Mum spoke to owner on the Monday to apologise again, informed us he had fractured skull, had part skull removed and at risk of meningitis! Anyway didn't hear anymore and started to fear the worst until last sunday when a friend at dog training cane over and said isn't it great news that dog is home.... We hadn't been informed by owners so were shocked to hear he had come home on the Thursday (had all happened on the Saturday) and was expected to make full recovery. Again didn't hear anymore and no contact from owners until tonight when they appeared at front door with vets bill for just over £3,500!!!! Obviously we said we would pay and so will somehow but we don't have that sort of money!!! The owners thanked mum for her quick actions on the day and said if they hadn't rushed him to vet immediately as they did he wouldn't have survived and suggested that it may be possible to make a claim on our house insurance - does anyone know if it is possible?
Sorry for the long post but wanted to tell whole story rather than it be just 'another staffy attack'

Beware of renewing your policy ahead of its renewal date; I rang Saga and renewed it 6 days earlier than the renewal date because we would be away at the time. As soon as you give your credit card details the payment is taken immediately; it's not possible for the payment to be delayed until the actual renewal date, so depending on your cards cut off date you could be facing a payment much earlier than you expected
  • hello
I am about to replace a battered asphalt flat roof with a more durable substance ie GRP a glass fibre substance with a 25 yr guarantee though I notice many companies require that roof should be tiles, slate, or asphalt. Does anyone know if I will be penalised and what is their reasoning

    thanks
  • Each company will have it's own underwriting criteria, the only way to know is to ask.
  • I had a burglary; watch and ipad stolen. £4k claim paid very promptly. following month renewal letter to say premium gone from £800 to £1400 pa!
shopped around a bit but due to very recent claim for break in and the fact that 30 years ago flood water came within 200 meters of house no-one would provide cover. It seems to me that it isn't worth claiming unless its for a huge amount as you end up paying it back.

Question: does the fact that others wouldn't provide cover mean that I have had an insurance refusal on my credit history and am on some sort of blacklist? :(

Budget wanted £260 on renewal, a quick search via the comparison sites found quite a few a lot cheaper.

Eventually went to the AA as they were the cheapest and had the potential of £36 cashback available from Quidco, paid £97, of which was a £1 credit card surcharge which got added right at the last second :(

But still nearly £200 saving from auto-reneweling, proving a point when phoning up Budget to cancel they soon dropped to £130, just shows how much profit they were hoping to make by sheep-auto renewing. :)
