I love the sound of that. My OH is not vegetarian but really fussy about animal fats, and spends a fortune on tiny pots of veggie pate from the supermarket. I'll definitely be trying that one. Thanks!0

I get mine in the local butchers - they are sometimes £1.00, sometimes £1.20a nd sometimes £1.50 depending on the size. I often get them as the meat on them is really sweet and nice. Be careful not to overcook them though as the meat goes stringy and is a bit tasteless. I always put a whole onion, a carrot, and a few peppercorns into the cooking water.Jane

We have very little left actually! There's some frozen veg (peas & sweetcorn) and frozen fishcakes (homemade), 8 x2 portions of pork loins (bought two packs on offer from Tesco's and froze in sets of 2), 2 packs of frozen lean mince.
We have onions, carrots but that's about it. I'm having a bit of a panic moment....
I made some spicy meatballs with a small pack of lean mince today (400g pack) and they were lovely.
Mix some spices ie into the meat mixture along with a bit of lemon or lime juice if you have that and mix in 1 beaten egg.
Shape into meatballs, I got about 27 out of that small pack of mince and I could have got more if I had made them smaller.
Fry them without oil in a non stick pan on a medium heat until they brown and then pour in a tin of tomatoes (19p for plum ones, chop them yourself and save about 6p) and a 4p tin of Tesco value curry sauce. Then simmer for about 15 mins or so and serve with rice.
I normally buy top of the range curry sauces but only because I can get them for about 39p/49p from a local discount shop but the Tesco 4p one is fine if you are mixing it with something else and adding spices.
I would slice your pork loins very thinly and then cut each strip into about 4 pieces to make them smaller and this will make a pile of meat which looks a lot more than a flat piece, then add to tomatoes and pasta etc.0 -

Morrisons sell them for £1.50.0 -
I'm going to sound really really daft here but here goes, what do you all mean by bulking out the mince with oats, can you not taste them or see them?
PP, do you really get 12 servings from 500g mince? I use 500g of lean mince for the 2 of us:eek: , no wonder my OH has gained 7lbs in less than a few months."Wisdom doesn't automatically come with old age. Nothing does, except wrinkles. It's true, some wines improve with age. But only if the grapes were good in the first place." — Abigail Van Buren0 -
Last week I spent £ 4 on a super baster chicken ( on offer at Morrisons ). from that I got ..
5 roast chicken dinners ,on Sunday ,, spicey chicken warps for four on Monday , and HUGE pan of homemade soup , which lasted till Wednesday.
bought the veg & sald in Lidl, and the rolls for the soup were reduced to 10p im Sommerfield... Just crisped them up in the oven0 -

I add one or two good handfuls of oats (depending on how much mince) - once they soak up the meat juices and you've added gravy/browning they've got the 'taste' and the 'look'. I find it works best if you've got other 'adds' though - lentils/ tomatoes/ chopped up mushrooms/ onion/ carrots - my lot don't tend to look too hard if it tastes good:D
If you've not done this before I'd suggest try smallish amounts of oats and increase each time until they suspect:rotfl: Just make sure you have enough liquid as you don't want the oats to burn.......:o
Hope this helps

Wish I had known about this site when I used to have to buy just potatos, cheese, beans, eggs, bread and milk every week.
Am spending an absolute fortune on food at the mo', partly out of laziness, partly out of necessity (difficult for me to home cook) and partly out of lack of interest in food.
You lot have absolutely inspired me as I want to drastically cut all spending now before money runs out!
Fantastic - thank you!I must go, I have lives to ruin and hearts to breakMy attitude depends on my Latitude 49° 55' 0" N 6° 19' 60 W0 -

Dry sage and onion stuffing mix works in the same way as oats as well0
