I've got a Specialized Rockhopper. I like it, but keep looking at a full sus one, but don't have £1k! I choose the Rockhopper as its a good frame and plan on upgrading it with new forks and disc breaks, as and when I can afford to.

Get hold of this months What Mountain Bike magazine. They review hardtails for up to £300. Last months MBR mag reviewed hardtails for up to £500 if you can get your hands on it.

This is a street bike, not a mountain bike, but for that price its very good value for money.

I've got an Edinburgh courier 7 my wife just bought a more expensive halfords bike (Subway?) & the Edinburgh bike is just so much better quality throughout.
