If you're riding on tarmac to work and back regularly the last thing you want is something with full suspension. In fact you'd be better with no suspension for road use. If you want ot use it offroad and onroad front suspension only may be work OK.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

  • Everyone is telling you to forget about full suspension. That isn't because we don't like full suspension, its because if you want a good full suspension bike you're looking at a minimum of £1000.

Forget about full suspension on your budget. Get a hardtail.

Like I said before, I have said what I intend on using the bike for.

I am looking for a hard tail in all instances but those where the bike is worth around £750 or more, like the one on eBay.

I am aware and was made aware after someone pointed out that a full suspension bike under £500 or so would be rubbish!

Don't mean to sound rude, I've seen people repeating themselves though and repeating the messages of others.

I had read that different manufacturers standard frame sizes can differ.

I'd probably be best off looking for something around 18-20", I'll be using it for forest trails and mountain biking, as well as moving to and from home to work. I don't want a hybrid, because when I get the chance to go to the woods I want to have some fun and not worry the bike is going to buckle etc.

I am a very similar size to you.
  • £750 will get you a good FS frame, not a good FS bike - and that is the minimum price, not an average.

A good hardtail will only 'buckle' if you're regularly dropping over 2-3 feet off the ends of jumps. Which I presume you won't be doing.

If its forest trails you like, there are plenty around (look on the forestry commission website) - but you will be wasting your money with full suspension at that price.

Are you aware of the cycle2work scheme? It could save you a small fortune.

Good advice here - just got a trek 6300 through this yesterday... bargaintastic.

(as an aside, I'm 6'2" and got a 19.5" frame...I could have got a 21, but hope the slightly smaller frame will feel better over techy stuff...)

Oh yes, I know where I want to ride but thank you for guiding me towards the forestry commission website.

I know of the cycle2work scheme, but I haven't actually got the job yet. I will need the bike to get to work wherever that may be. Also, I will be using it to get to University for lectures and seminars.

    Trek a good make?

    I would suggest

    Trek
    Orange
    Marin

aviod halfords not very good bikes and the prices seem a bit off on sum, bought my daughter a bike Wheelbase for £135.00 and the same bike in halfords was £240.00

best to get to a good bike shop and try a load of different ones.

if you can get a 2007 one it will save you money. i have an Orange Clockwork R (old now) but bought it in 98 (97 bike) for £350.00 insetad of 550..

    Regards

    GD

Thats a bit of a generalisation.... as I said above, Halfords Carerra, GT and Boardman bikes are some of the best spec bikes around for the money....

(And no I don't work for Halfords or have a bike from there)

OP, my (biased) suggestion would be the GT Avalanche range

Yes, I'm quite interested in buying either a GT or GIANT.
