Halfords are a very mixed bunch, some branches are good and some are awful. It just depends on the indiviual staff. Their Carrera range tend to be decent enough bikes.

Have to agree with Bill Scarab. The bikes from halfords depend on who sets them up- perhaps the bikes should have a final inspection from the manager before passing onto the purchaser.

Could someone please tell me about stem sizes and also tell me how I find out which bike size is right for me (particularly the frame)?

What do you guys think of http://www.on-one-shop.co.uk?

OP, you really need to buy from a shop where you can try the frame out for size...

It is possible to measure your inside leg and then say "I need x size frame" but to be honest, not all "x" size frames are the same, they all differ in geometry.

It also makes a difference what you are doing with the bike.

I am 6' 1" with 33" inside leg which would mean by that website above that I would need a 21" Mountain Bike, however I ride an 18" bike...

I had read that different manufacturers standard frame sizes can differ.

I'd probably be best off looking for something around 18-20", I'll be using it for forest trails and mountain biking, as well as moving to and from home to work. I don't want a hybrid, because when I get the chance to go to the woods I want to have some fun and not worry the bike is going to buckle etc.

I am a very similar size to you.

Does your employer not do the "bike to work" scheme? If they do, you can get a tax free bike...

Still doesn't help you to decide which bike though, have you narrowed it down any?
