No you are not missing anything. Plumbnation do supply very cheap bit( mass buying power)
But Bg only pay about £400 for the boiler they quoted you!0 -
It does seem pretty expensive. There's an item on the quote "Replacement Conventional Boiler Installation" £1200. The engineer said it would take a day and a half, so that makes the labour charge £800 a day, or £100 an hour. And in reality, I don't see that £1600 of the £2800 quote is going on parts, so that makes the labour considerably more than £100 an hour.0

I think you'd need you head looking at if you think BG is worth any extra money. They botched my system for years missing the main fault in the end. For me it's local independent all the way. But as I'd never touch food From m&s again worst quality short dated and over priced. Again I'll stick with my local independent butcher and green grocer.
To many people are happy to be overcharged in the name of big companies. The futures bright the future is Ginger0 -
No change for British gas i am afraid, Just got a qoute £4062.38 minus £400 minus £100 for a like for like combi exchange. They quoted for the most entry level worcester 24i junior. Had a little shop around and a bit of bartering got the worcester 30si better boiler rest like for like quote for £2156 all in job done. .Take not British gas.0

Around 32% across the board nationally. Last year 2010, BG installed approx 128,000 boilers / CH systems.
Or, to put it another way, that's 1 in every 11 boiler installations was carried out by BG.
Lots of people here going on about getting cheaper quotes from local plumbers, but where's that local plumber going to be when your new boiler stops working at 4pm on Sunday afternoon? Most likely in the pub, downing his 6th pint of Magners, watching Chelsea v Man U on the big screen - mobile phone turned off.
People buy from BG for the same reasons they shop in Marks & Spencers and not Lidl, or drive a Mercedes instead of a Kia.
But, if all you want to do is scrimp every last penny out of the job, I'm sure there's some Albanian plumber who's got a job lot of unbranded Wickes boilers and can do you a deal for cash.
Its the Albanians British Gas employ you really need to worry about. Well if you write complete rubbish you can expect to get a rubbish reply. Most really good BG engineers leave because of all the beaurocratic crap they are subjected to and set up on their own as independents. Guess who stays.0 -
We do a lot of domestic installation, and replace boilers.
The way i see it, British Gas overheads mean they can't compete with smaller companies, full stop.
There are a lot of rogue traders around, yes, and people may feel more safer using BG, but never kid yourself that you are getting a competitive price, you never will.
It's not hard to find good tradesmen.
If you use a smaller company who then go out of business, it still probably works out cheaper to call in a new plumber to take a look at any issue you have with your boiler.
It's also a fallacy that using big companies is safer, tell that to the people who pre paid for tesco kitchens before they went out of business and lost all of their money.
I don't want to sound like i am Bashing BG, although it is my interest if people start looking for independent, because it's all just business at the end of the day and we have to make a profit. I despair at blatant BS though which takes people for mugs.0 -
This price is way too much! who gets £1900 for a day's work ? certainly not a BG engineer!
BG quoted my sons very elderly and frail grandfather £8000 for a boiler which was "beyond repair" and we had it fixed for £250 and is stil working ... Hmmmm nasty salesmen
BG just quoted my elderly and trusting parents £2600 ( with a discount, which impressed them ... "But we're getting a discount of £800 dear, and the man was very 'nice' " .. This is the kind of 'nice' I don't need in my parents home, who let the wolf in - watch out!
Anyway basic cost of a Baxi or Wooster boiler retail (without huge trade discount that BG would receive) is around £850, an engineer and his mate a day's work, so the total would come out around £1500-1800 as a fair price I'd have thought
It would appear that BG are cynically targeting the elderly knowing that they are generation that trust the company as it has british in the name and was once a nationalised company. This kind of cynical pressure selling to our elderly is not OK anymore than banks ripping off people with PPI was ok .
It's misleading0 -
Well given the thread isn't locked, I guess it might be okay to keep it resurrected.
Here is hoping to get an updated status from people on the current BG quotes.
Have they changed and become competitively better priced or still overly priced?0 -
my mate can ddo it for 1.5 k
easy
