It's Barbican or bust for me I think.
My personal preference is for just west of the City, but each to his own!...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
I presume you get off at Bodmin Parkway then. Lovely looking little cafe in the old signal box there!neverdespairgirl wrote: »No, north Cornwall - we've stayed near Camelford twice, and near Port Isaac (had to give DS a look at "his"port!)
Ah, I guess if you're planning ahead you can get it cheaper. Whenever I look for train times/prices it's usually "next week or sooner", so the cheaper tickets have gone.neverdespairgirl wrote: »Back of an envelope calculation. If, say, we were going to Penzance for a week in July, sat to sat, it would cost us as a family £195 to get there and back by public transport (train) or £146 by coach.
By car, it would be a round trip of 636 miles. At a cost of, say, 40p a mile, this would cost £255.
Blimey. Pricey car. I'd price my car today at 25p/mile.
I don't like trains, but that's for a couple of reasons. One of which is travelling alone. There's nobody to watch your stuff if you want to go to the loo. You also can't wander. And even if there is a buffet car there (they always seemed to close down when they got to Devon when I was on trains) you still have problems going because of nobody minding your stuff.
I like Port Isaac. I looked at buying a house there, back when they were cheap (1998/1999), but I felt it was too remote. There's not enough there for full-time living really.
Going to Penzance by train is dead easy. As the train ends there, it goes there. But up Camelford etc way, it's another bus to get up there. 45 minutes if you get the right bus, 2.5 hours each way if you time it wrong.0 -

Thassa one. It's a tiny little bus-shelter-like station!PasturesNew wrote: »

I used 40p a mile as it's the IR figures, not just petrol, though.PasturesNew wrote: »I like Port Isaac. I looked at buying a house there, back when they were cheap (1998/1999), but I felt it was too remote. There's not enough there for full-time living really.
I like it too, but think I agree with you about full-time living. oddly enough, I do (or sort of).I live in the 'burbs and I hate them.
You know that Betjemin poem Slough?
Live in the country or the city. Anything else is a hateful compromise IMO.
I went to a golf club at the weekend. Slacks and jackets and reserved parking spaces for the Club Captain and the Lady Captain. Tailored shorts and collared shirts. 4 gins and then drive home slowly.
Tinned minds.
'come, friendly bombs, and fall on slough'. or similar.
got betj into a lot of trouble, if memory serves my reading of it..
prescient bloke, our john.
lives could be just as empty 70yrs ago.
I've been to slough. the luftwaffe obviously weren't listening.
could have saved us all from 'the office'..miladdo0 -
do you work for a one brand dealer mrB or just generic used cars
have you seen any change in buyer attitudes and mentality caused by the fuel situation, it would be interesting to get an anecdote from someone in the industry.
I've seriously considered a BMW M6 a couple of times, but I must be getting old, when the thing that's put me off most, is it's MPG.
Good afternoon, i work for a main nissan dealer but we do sell non franchise cars aswell.
My tip to beat the credit crunch is the audi a2 1.4tdi preferably. If you can get a 52 plate with sub 50k for around £5500 you'll be on to a winner. 60mpg £35 a year rfl and german engineering.0 -
Of all the reasons I've heard for not taking trains, being worried about leaving your suitcase unattended when you go to the loo/buffet is a new one on me!
You could always do what I did when inter-railing round Europe in my teens - get a cheap bike lock and lock your luggage to the rack. Failing that, ask a honest looking person to keep an eye on it. Old ladies are usually willing to oblige.'Never keep up with Joneses. Drag them down to your level. It's cheaper.' Quentin Crisp0 -
I am 5'1". Firstly I could never reach the rack on old trains. Secondly, I've not noticed them on modern trains, but if they exist they're up there out of reach.Austin_Allegro wrote: »Of all the reasons I've heard for not taking trains, being worried about leaving your suitcase unattended when you go to the loo/buffet is a new one on me!

the problem these days is if you leave a suitcase unattended you are likely to come back to it and find it blown up by some anti terrorist squad, while you are carted away for 42 days pending your transfer to camp X-rayIt's a health benefit ...0

Quite right. Hopefully Derek Davis' actions will bring the issue of civil rights to the forefront. Currently it seems that the public has been brainwashed by the media.--
Every pound less borrowed (to buy a house) is more than two pounds less to repay and more than three pounds less to earn, over the course of a typical mortgage.0 -
So now I can't pee while on a train or I'll go to jail for 42 days???
Blimey, you can see why I don't get out much!0
