I do visit a few car forums regularly for maintenence tips and know-how, as we still have the economical little car we intended to trade-in back in 2005. Do all the servicing and any small repairs myself to save quite a bit compared to the stealer/dealer.

It's now become interesting to see people's reactions when asking for valuations on their higher-powered motors which they are considering selling, usually getting a few supportive replies for a decent price to list it at, before more informed posters bringing them back to earth.

    Example
Jason, good luck with it, but your asking just 2k short of what I got for my 04 plate R32 with 20k miles on the clock, for a car thats 8 years old with 100k on the clock.

I tried doing this, and no interest. So be prepared to come down a lot, big engined cars have take a raping recently, even if yours doesnt fall into the tax thing, its in the back of peoples minds that big and petrol = expensive.

My thoughts is wat satnam said about the part ex price would be about right, dealers don't want them as they can't sell them, theres a LOAD of them for sale right now as the owners no longer want them, and thats what I had to deal with with the R32.

Be prepared, thats all I'll say, as a buyer, for yours, I would look in the current climate to offer around £4000 for it. Its 8 years old with 100k on it :)
Just have a look at ebay completed listings, and get ready to cry!!

4x4s and big flash cars are taking a huge hammering in terms of secondhand values. You got lots of flash idiots buying them when credit (especially through MEWing) was plentiful and fuel was relatively cheap.

Now that credit is hard to get and the pressure is on to repay existing debts, the road tax is set to rocket and fuel has gone through the roof (especially diesel) they suddenly realise that they are saddled with the equivalent of a mechanical road-going dinosaur. And of course, no-one wants to buy one these days. Result, dirt cheap 4x4s.

Meanwhile, my fully depreciated small diesel is giving me an average of >50mpg, cheap road tax and the lowest insurance costs. All the more cash in the bank for me.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Don't apply for jobs that are 26 miles away from your house? Seriously, why do people live so far from their jobs?

Don't tell me it works out cheaper because the houses cost less, because I've done my own calculations on that when we were looking for somewhere cheaper to live. And it's cheaper to live in town and cycle to work than move away and have to run a car/get the bus.

My DH HAS to work in London if we are to stay in UK. My training is in a rural industry. One of us is going to have to commute if we work in our trained industries. He has to, he earns! (If I return to work I would expect not a high income but a satisfyng job). Furthermore our interests are rural, we both ride and have a horse, we have a dog and enjoy walking.

The train does NOT work out cheaper for us, infact I could drive DH there come home, drive back to pick him up and drive home again for less than the return trainfare. (Out side congestion charge hours!). But ofcourse that would be ridiculous time wise and very environmentally friendly.

The best solution longterm for us would be two homes. Not perhaps ideal, but the best. Shoe box walking distance in town for sleeping, home for me to work from and us to live all the time. This would probably be most environmentaly friendly especially. Currently he lodges, but not walking distance from his office at all! we would obviously beenfit on tax relief on a secon, town home as a environment and congestion saving thing.

we never intend to be a two car family. I drive a relatively small 2 wheel drive, not a four wheel drive. I might in the future need a LGV. We intend to wait to see what happens with fuel alternatives if we can because while we want to be environmentaly friendly we CANNOT afford to keep replacing vehicles.

Anyway, the short term answer is to live far from work and buy in suburbs as its what we can currently afford, is equidistant between daily work an daily personal commitments and, yes, as expensive with travel as living in London probably.

BTW I needed a fourwheel drive more in London with the sleeping policemen and potholes than I do on our rough white roads in the sticks, lol. (didn't have one then either though). I only used car for getting to difficult places or out of town.

It does however put the issue up there, front and centre.

As it stood, the whole thing would have went into the background and Brown would have got away with pushing 42 days detention through, however grubbily he did it. The Lords will probably reject it anyway but new legislation allows it to be passed regardless. Davis knew that Cameron wasn't solidly behind opposition to the law should it come back to the Commons so he's taking pre-emptive action.

As regards the whole issue of Civil Liberties, I don't believe that the Tories are as anti-liberties as you think. They're certainly traditionally behind harsher laws but when it comes to 'freedom' they're no worse than New Labour who seem to 'know better' on everything and do things 'for the people's own good'. There has been this bizarre p1ssing contest in the last few years between the two as to who can be "harder on terror" and this makes Labour just as bad IMO.

I wouldn't trust either party, frankly. I'd expect the Libdems to be standing up and making more of an issue of defending civil liberties but they don't seem to be as vocal as I would like either. Well done to individuals like Davis who stand up and be counted.

I agree. Tories are/will be just as bad. They'll tell you owt you want to hear if you'll vote them in and that's exactly what they're doing now.

I used to think the LibDems would be best but now I don't because they're too up their own !!!!!! with "green" issues and far too fluffy and huggy these days.

Whilst there's a lot I don't agree with with the BNPs proposed policies, there's still a hell of a lot that I do agree with and which would do this country a world of good, so they will continue to get my vote. I await the inevitable "you're a racist" onslaught...

fascism is a cuckoo ideology, how it gains a foothold is by including enough 'reasonable' things for normal people to agree with with a tiny amount of the more odious stuff. As it gets a foothold the balance shifts, and it's a short trip from there to a Kristallnacht
    It's a health benefit ...

I presume you get off at Bodmin Parkway then. Lovely looking little cafe in the old signal box there!

Small World! on the Platform by the side of the Car park - I know it well! I expect you'll find me there, in the Summer, with a pasty and a cup of tea, waiting for various people to arrive from London. The GF's dads got a nice house down in Lerryn, and we enjoy spending time down there.

We went to test drive one a new A2 a few years back. Or at least I think it was an A2... looks like your photo... similar to the Mercedes thingy but by Audi.

The dealer then told us they weren't making any more... end of the line. Couldn't see that being good for residual values. Then I found they were aluminium which makes repair costlier if bodywork damaged... and I wonder if Audi ever went about setting up the specialist repair shops around the UK for aluminium bodywork they said they would for these cars. Also explained why the quote for car insurance on the Audi A2 came back quite a bit higher than I expected.

Yes it will have been the a2, you were wrong, the residual values on them especially diesel variants are extremely high.
