Unemployment is the final lagging indicator I've been waiting for. Seeing the jobless figures rise this week has really put a spring in my step. I'm going to be out celebrating this news tonight.

More forced sellers mean lower House Prices.

I hope you don't lose your job Zammo - that might muck up your plans a bit.

I sometimes wonder what would happen if everybody worked part time. We'd all earn half as much but everything would cost half as much, so overall we'd have the same spending power. Then everyone would spend the other half of the week working for charities for free. I think this could make for a good system.

I think this was tried in the Depression in the OXO scheme (O= day off, X= day at work) but it didn't take off.

I'm no economist but I suspect the main problem would be it would make the UK uncompetitive in a global market. It is already hard for us to compete with emerging markets where people are prepared to work all hours (and they have to; if you don't work, you starve - you don't get obese in front of Jeremy Kyle) and it would make the UK even less competitive.

It would probably only work in some kind of heavily state-managed, subsistence economy which didn't rely on exports (give Labour time and they might manage it!).

I'd also be wary about more people working for charities. Whilst they do a lot of good, the big charities have become extensions of the state in many ways, and have become powerful lobbying groups trying to impose their particular views on the public (eg, the NSPCC campaign against corporal punishment).

It would be nice if people worked informally for small local charities though or got involved in youth work - something that the long hours working culture in the UK has decimated.

I didn't quite understand that post by ianmr65....but reading back the gigantic words....old people on pensions?.
You know what? I have no problem working and paying taxes to support old people at all. What is your problem with old people?

    Nothing as such...

but an ever growing elderly population, which is living longer and which is devouring 30% - 50% of all public expenditure is unsustainable. We as a country cannot afford to keep doing this.
The fact is the gov would rather get people worked up over benefit scroungers, and illegal immigrants, and the terrorism bill than face this.

    Because
    a) No one currently in the goverment now, will have to deal with the implosion in public finances that this will cause in twenty or so years time. (the hong kong solution)
    b ) It's a serious serious vote loser.

Despite the fact that starting to tackle this now rather than in twenty years will make it much easier to deal with over the years to come.

Absolutely no chance of that Danno me lad. I work for the government - in a job centre - so business will be booming over the next 5 years. In fact they're actually taking staff on at my place at the moment. The only downside about it will be having to deal with even more workshy sub-human scum than normal, but I'm sure my shiny new BTL portfolio will more than make up for it.

Sorry to hear about your son's accident, hope he mends soon.

Did he get her contact details?
Nope..no-one did.I guess shock of the moment.
But he's fine...just realising that he's not invincible. @ 21 you are just full of zest for life and can't immagine terrible things happening.

Still, he'll never cycle around a big roundabout again...so another lesson learnt.

Beware TARGETS. Govts love targets...especially when they are under pressure. Mr consultant will be hired (desperate to keep up his own salary levels) and to prove his worth, will come up with lots and lots of targets...and if the staff don't meet them, it's P45 time.

So you are going to have to get your customers / clients / guests (whatever the visitors to the job centre are called now) into work, any work.
You may have to give them a more positive description too QUOTE; workshy, sub human scum UNQUOTE. It may help the process.

I don't want to be too personal, but you can't be on a gigantic wage so don't you stress about the ammount of mortgage debt (shiny BTL's) you are liable for?
However, if you are in your 20's, probably not......fears don't take hold until the mid to late 30's.

Enjoy your 'celebrating risiing unemployment figures' drink. Film it, lock it away and look at in a decades time.
