  • If you have got a Virgin Credit card you can get nearly 20% off the advertised price for 1st advance fares and 10% off standard fares.

Go to virgintrains.co.uk/vmoney and there are all the details.

If you have not got a Virgin Credit card and travel alot on Virgin Trains it would pay to get one even of you only use it to buy your train tickets.

when I put the journey requirements in to the Trainline.com

    DON'T use the trainline.com !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You said earlier: "I had forgotten how stupid these rail companies are - not giving the best fare possible" - they do give the best fare possible - unlike the trainline who charge commission, fees, postage, etc, etc.

    Use the SWT website !

No they don't - if I simply use the route that *any of them* try to get me to use - it costs me £60 more than my cheapest option - of buying two separate tickets for each journey.....

I actually have to travel on Wednesday and come back Friday. Best fare I could find was £71.30 2 singles total.
Had to travel on the 11.04 Harrogate or else it would have cost more than double
Had to come back on the 15.00 train as the earlier one was much more expensive. Also had to pay £5 for special delivery. Too late for ordinary post and it is not possible to pick tickets up at Harrogate Station.
Could have cost more than £200 if I had chosen the trains I would have prefered. First was over £100 so with the cost of the Hotel in Glasgow just making do.
Only 5 minutes to connect at York and I have to go on the 11.04 so thinking of buying another ticket from Harrogate for the 10.04 to make sure I don't miss my connection. This happened the last time as there was a delay on the Leeds to York train. They put me on a later train but it would not be ideal in this case.

Thanks for the info. in any case.

Don't buy another ticket, the Harrogate to York part is a Non reservable Connection, which means you can catch any reasonable service to make you connection at York, just go on a earlier service to York. ie 10:05 arriving 10.45.

Thank you so much for that. I would not have expected to be able to use this ticket and bought another. I will now have time in York to get a coffee and a sandwich which I prefer to buy at the Lemon Tree cafe on the platform I come in and leave from.

    Warm regards

  • Me and my wife would like to go to london Covent garden from Wellington, Shropshire and prefer to travel by train. I have had a look about and Return tickets for the 2 of us travelling on a friday and back on a monday are £92
Upon further looking i have found 2 single tickets on the Friday for £22 and 2 singles on the monday at £16!
Is this how to save on train travel as im not sure how to split the journeys or may it be possible to lower the fares further? We're not fussy about travel times but would like to arrive at around midday Friday and leave around same times Monday as we know that the prices rise significantly at peak times.
    Thanks again!!

You seem to have found some good fares there.
You don't say which Friday and Monday, but the cheapest you are ever going to find is £12.00 each way for two adults.

Remember, with Advance Singles you must travel on the booked trains.

Have a look at the video on the Cheap Train Tickets Article for a better understanding on split ticketing. But I don't think you will find anything cheaper than you have already found.

Buy in advance and for that route look at Wrexham Shropshire Railway as they are the cheapest.

But if you miss out on the advance singles then the Super Off Peak Return 'WSMR only' is great value at £80 and can be bought up to the day of travel.
