I am a Ready Brek fan, never tried to real porridge oats although my dad eats them all the time! Ready Brek reminds me of being a kid, and going to school and a cold winter morning! Anyone remember the advert with the glowing kid!
The Advert - Central Heating for Kids!
Certainly going to try the coconut suggestions though!0 -
Ready Brek !!! bleugh spawn of the devil!!!.
Scots Porridge oats made with water, and the top of the milk ( gold top)pooled on top with a sprinbkle of salt was how my Mum made it when I was a little girl.My two brothers and I would take it turns for the top of the milk:)
Nowadays no top of the milk anymore its all the same colour:)but I still make it with water and a dash of salt on top and a bit of milk around the dges to cool it slightly before eating.Filling ,good for you and relatively cheap.it will keep me going until lunchtime and takes only a couple of minutes in the saucepan in the morning

Ahh well this threads makes me ask a question I've been wondering for a while. Do porridge oats all taste the same or do different brands taste different (eg some are nicer than others)?
I ask because I never used to like porridge. I considered it to taste like I would expect wallpaper paste to do. Earlier this year I had to learn to like it for health reasons and I can now eat porridge with about 1/2 to 2/3rds water to milk with mixed berries (can't manage it plain or with salt and not allowed sugar).
The first time I went out to buy it, I overheard a lady looking for Quaker oats as she liked them best, so that's what I bought and have stuck to every since and I'm wary of buying another brand in case they don't taste the same.

I’ve never had porridge made with rolled oats/porridge oats, I was brought up on porridge made with pinhead oatmeal or as the pack I got in Sainsbobs calls it Scottish oatmeal.
Just had some this morning topped with stewed apples (artificial sweetener instead of sugar)
The bonus with oatmeal is there are many other uses for it
Oatmeal stuffing (mealie jimmy) – eg beef olives, roast chicken.
Coating fish – especially herring.
Oatcakes.
And of course skirlie – can’t have mince & tatties without skirlieJan - June Grocery spends = £531.61

Not all porridge oats are equal. I personally prefer Aldi to Lidl cheap oats. Sainsbury's jumbo oats make a slow cooking, chunky porridge, but are more expensive. I mix these half and half with cheap oats, cook with water and add a splash of milk/cream/fruit juice/yoghurt to cool. a little. I also add lots of toppings - chopped nuts and golden syrup yesterday. Steel cut oats are meant to be the healthiest but are again expensive. Try a few brands and see what you like.
Incidentally, the rotation of molecules is why cheap vitamin tablets can be half as effective as expensive ones. More expensive brands isolate and add in the molecules with left symmetry that our bodies have the receptors for and can use. I doubt microwaves have any effect on the water in porridge however.
Oh, and I make mine on the hob0 -

I find that with some of the economy brands, you sometimes find little bits of husk mixed in.
But, I don't find any difference in taste from any of the brands.
Some are milled more & i think that makes a difference to how creamy they are but if you soak your oats overnight & cook in the morning, they're nice & creamy whether you use water or milk. if making in the saucepan & you stir a lot, that makes them creamy too.
I don't like the instant fruit-flavoured oats - far too sweet, imo.0 -
Ok going to try proper porridge oats... Let's compare them to Ready Brek!0

We love scandinavian style porridge, cooked with a handfull of dried cherries in it and served with a nut of butter in the centre of the bowl and a good sprinkling of cinnamon sugar. It's perfect stuff for cold wintery mornings, Cheers Lyn xxx.0
