Use one teacup size of oats per person, then add one teacup of water, and one of milk. I use the stove top, as I've had too many disasters with the microwave (bowls tilting and ending up all over the microwave LOL)
I don't soak it or anything, and it's always really nice. If you prefer it with all milk, sub the water for the milk!

    how about using the cooker?
50g porridge, 300ml of milk, bring to boil , simmer for 3 mins(some labour intensive "porridge stirring" required throughout)

I do it like this everyday but use half milk and water its the quickest tastiest porridge in the world , a sprinkle of brown sugar and you are in heaven... keeps me going for hours...:T

  • I have always made porridge the way my late Mum made it and its fine
    1 cup of porridge
1.1/2 cups of water .put into pan on the gas ,stand stirring it until the bubbles start to pop and then pour it into a bowl ,sprinkle with salt and pour some cold milk round the edge ,voila one serving of porridge .
I buy Tesco's value oats and they are about 60p a kilo, and they are fine. Also useful in Twinks hob-nobs. I don't like readybreak or stuff like that I only eat proper rolled oats.Very cheap and nutricious.I actually made some when I came in from Uni last night at 8.30.p.m. as I was freezing and it warmed me up a treat.Cost per bowl = pennies as a kilo lasts for weeks

I use the quantities as described by Jackie0 but put it in a pan the night before to soak.
Get up, heat pan stir and in a few minutes delicious porridge.
I add milk to mine with sugar or salt depending what mood I am in. OH adds honey
  • Just use boiling water from the kettle. A scoop of oats then about 1.5 scoops of water, stir it in and leave it a few minutes to thicken up. You might have to experiment with the amount of water to get it right. Dead quick and no extra washing up.
  • Get a simmer mat

I bring oats and milk or water to the boil then turn the gas down to lowest, put the mat on the gas and pan on mat and it will stand like that for as long as you like and it is ready as soon as you like. It is brilliant

lol , maybe we should start a "porrige lovers" thread, i prefer dark brown muscavado sugar on mine, and serve it on a plate rather than in a bowl as it cools quicker

    Hi ragz,

There's an earlier thread on how everyone makes porridge that may help so I've added your thread to it to keep the replies together.

After reading this thread i've decided to have porridge tomorrow for breakfast with stewed apples!

I'd say that I don't have a microwave and these tips on geting the porridge right on the cooker will be very helpful!

    Thanks.
