I like mine with chopped apples & sultanas. I add mixed fruit compotes from our garden grown soft fruit, or home made blackberry syrup.
But does anybody have a really good recipe for a Savoury Porridge0 -
I have been using the porridge instant packs to make this in the microwave at work (work shifts so dont often have time for breakfast before running out the door) but had a thought that I could try the soaking thing overnight and micrwave that way, when you soak the porridge overnight (would someone be so kind to tell me quantities for one person) with milk/water (i thought i might try half and half) do you pour the remaining liquid away before cooking and top up with more or do you just cook whats left after the soaking (also I guess you leave it in the fridge overnight?)
sorry for the silly questions
thanks

I like mine with a sprinkle of cinnamon, adds a lovely warming flavour and its much healthier than sugar or syrup.Boots Card - £17.53, Nectar Points - £15.06 - *Saving for Chrimbo*2015 Savings Fund - £2575.000

You shouldn't need to soak if you're using porridge oats. it's only oatmeal that need a good soak.
I rarely microwave our porridge, but if I am doing just one single portion, I just cook it on a fairly low setting for about 5 minutes. You could cook it on a higher setting a bit quicker, but it'll probably spatter, boil round the edges and be runny in the middle.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member # 593 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts!0 -
Use Jumbo Oats and cook with water. Add double cream and brown sugar - yum, yum, yum:D
Do not cook with salt  - no wonder we Scots have a high rate of heart disease (I know double cream ! but it is yummy). Putting salt in porridge is like putting sugar on your tomatoes  - my old Auntie Jean used to put sugar on tomatoes in her piece (sandwich). She said it stopped the tomatoes being wershy.0 -
HI all, I have tried searching the forum but end up with millions of unrelated topics so I must not be doing it right!
My OH has been cooking his porridge in the microwave, which is fine although he ends up taking it out every half a minute to add more milk/stir it.
however, now our 2 toddlers really want to have porridge with Daddy in the morning and doing the microwave method again and again doesn't appeal.
Can I cook it in the slow cooker over-night? Or leave to soak in a pan all night then cook in the morning?
Sorry if this is a really stupid question!

my mum cooks it the night before, leaves it in the pan with the lid on, then just adds some more milk in the morning and heats it through.

I just cook it every morning, use the nomal porridge oats, set timer for 6 mins, stir constantly until it boils, then leave it. When you've ate it, soak the pot in cold water and leave it for a few hours. then the skin will just slide off .
EDITED --sorry I meant on the cooker, not the microwave !0 -
We microwave in a wide topped dish.
Put the required amount in the dish the night before (Trial a error will soon tell you how much of each) Then for one serving, 3 Mins in a 10000w microwave, --No need to stir.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
Ermmmm......
how about using the cooker?
50g porridge, 300ml of milk, bring to boil , simmer for 3 mins(some labour intensive "porridge stirring" required throughout)0
