I usually either slice some banana, sprinkle a bit of cinnamon on it and then pour the porridge on top, or I do the same but with stewed apples.
Then either some honey or a bit of sugar on top of the porridge.
(the porridge I make just with water, - 1 part porridge to 3 parts water)
  • I used to think I hated porridge but discovered I jsut didn't like it the way my mum made it (ie traditional Scottish way, bleurgh, and I am allowed to say that cos so am I )

Then I discovered that there is more to porridge than just salt. I make mine with roughly half milk to water which I think gives a creamier fluffier lighter porridge. I either add raisins and hazlenuts whilst cooking, sprinkle on cinnamon and then drizzle with a teaspoon of honey until it goes all melty and you get a pool down the side of the bowl and then I try and make sure I get a bit of honey with every bite, I can usually just about manage it. Or if I can be faffed I add some chopped apple just before tipping into my bowl (as I don't like the apple to cook at all) instead of the raisins but I still add the cinnamon and honey. Never tried with apple juice but good idea Troll35, I will give that a go. Like this I love it and it really sets me up for the day and I would say I do feel a bit of central heating in my tum. And I don't add salt at all, bleurgh! Try googling Stoaters (think that is right) porridge shop, they have lots of lovely ideas for toppings as I saw them once in a magazine.
  • My Mum always made gorgeous porrige when I was young. She made it with water, but when it was cooked she added Carnation milk and a spoonful of Golden Syrup. Ooh I can taste it now, yum!!!

Forgot to add, I had a weight problem that has lasted all my life - I wonder why :D
I let my mind wander and it never came back!
  • When I have porridge I make it with milk & a dash of double cream at the end oh & a teaspoon of sugar, I never time it I just stop cooking when it looks like wet cement.

I'll never look at porridge the same way again :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

i also hated porridge when i grew up - but that was because my mother cooked it in milk, which i can't stand. it was a revelation to learn you don't have to use milk, but can do with water. in my version i mix it with a puree of cooked dried apricots. OH likes maple syrup on his (he has milk too), but that is not a very MS option! alternatively my blackberry jelly which never set very well is a good topping.

I *love* porridge, but for some reason it never fills me up.... maybe that just means I have an addiction to it....

  • I love porridge and have it every day for breakfast. It's the only thing that fills me up until lunchtime. I make mine the same way as they do in hospital, with semi-skimmed milk. I like it quite thick and then I have a bit of cold milk and a teaspoon of sugar on the top. When I was akid I had ready brek every day with sugar and cream off the top of the milk:D .

I thought I hated porridge- always hated readybrek. Then discovered its the texture so I bought Jumbo oats - doesn't look like its already been chewed that way :rotfl:

I make mine with water, I like it with:

    cinnamon, honey and raisins
raspberries and a little brown sugar
    frozen forest fruits

or todays.... cocoa powder and sugar!!! Well I needed a chocolate fix and thought it would be less calories than choc spread on toast :D
