According to my book 'Twins, Triplets & more' - written by the co-founder of the Twins & Multiple Births Association and a Consultant Paediatrician specialising in multiple births.
"It appears that all women who conceive have the same chance of having identical twins. The only exception to this are very rare couples where one partner appears to have a dominant gene for identical twinning running through their family. Anyone would know if they belonged to one of these rare families...... "

I obtained this book in 1992, so there is a chance that some of the info has changed, but the author started her work in this area in 1973 and I don't think the above info will have changed just because we have better technology now!

The info for having fraternal (non-identical twins) can be affected by a lot of different factors...and is much more affected by there being fraternal twins on the Mum's side of the family. As a previous poster explained, it relies on the Mum releasing 2 eggs at the same time to be fertilised. (my husband would have loved to think it was down to him that we had our twins - but it's my credit not his;))

  • Sorry but this twin insurance is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard!!

I have a twin brother and I have identical twin daughters. The non id twins generally skip a generation down the female side and anyone, yes ANYONE can have id twins whether twins are in your family or not as they are not hereditory.

Twins is something that should def be celebrated and not looked upon with fright! I can vouch for that. :o)))

Thank you Leylie I was just curious

EmmaandDave Im a twin as is my mum and her uncles. All identical. Me and DH are looking at starting a family soon and as the whole twin thing hasnt yet missed a generation I was curious. Both my siblings, including my twin have had children neither having twins. Maybe its down to me or maybe we will finally get a twin break!
  • My parents said when mum was pregnant with my brother they took out twin insurance as there was a possibility and that was back in 1972 before scans were available.
  • I am a twin 3 one of my parents was a twin and 3 of my grandparents was a twin.....

we looked for twin insurance when we found out i was pregnant again... already had a DD

I think the policy would cost £483. for £1,000 of cover..... for me we decided against it in the end.

but the questionaire was really thick and detailed..

Yep was twins - my gorgeous boys....

consulant gave us a 1 in 12 chance if we got pregnant again... I would really love another baby (just not sure we could cope with another set of twins)

I'm finally about to start ttc again after it going on hold for 2 years as my husband was too ill for us to continue trying. So I'd absolutely love to have twins this time as it would be like I'd fast forward to where I could have been if I hadn't miscarried my first pregnancy and my husband hadn't been so sick.

As far as I can tell I'm a double ovulator at least two cycles a year. I ovulate once and then again about 5 days later. On those months I go 5-6 weeks between periods. There isn't a huge history of twins in my family. My grandmother came from a family with 3 sets of twins, although only one set survived. So I could have inherited the trait from my great-grandmother.

you take out a policy before you have your scan and then if you are blessed to give birth to twins the policy pays you out. which means you will be able to get some lovely extra bits for your babies. i think some people may have read it wrong its not that we dont want to have twins is just that incase we are lucky enough to the extra money from the policy helps
now proud mum to 3 handsome boys :j latest one born 10/10/11:j
